Good Cheap Shop for Gear Re-install??

    Hi,
I am looking for recommendations for a good cheap independent shop to re-install a set of 4.10s in my MM. I live in Clayton, so anything around Garner, Clayton, Smithfield, etc.
Crossroads Ford wanted $850 labor to do it. It's only a 2-4hr job. That's over $150/hr labor. What a joke.

    Thanks,
    brian

Call 1-800-FORD-788 and press "1". Have the last 6 of your VIN handy. You will get the numbers for FREE. You'll pay $$$ for the certificate.

MM traded in 8/9/13 @ 128909 miles. It was fun for almost 8 years. I met airmercpun on 1/17/14. He was the new owner of my former ride. -Now gone.

Update: back in the game with a late build 03 GMGS with some MM add ons like Escape audiophile radio w/Sirius sat radio, rear sway bar, catback exhaust, and header panel.

    Rest In Peace:

See my garage file for part numbers and whatnot.

IMHO, this site- the members that I chat with- and the ones that I now Hang with- are like my 2nd family. There is such an ongoing welcome feeling here that even members who don't or no longer own the MM can feel.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyum.. . and I thought $350 was expensive... Routinely pay around $250 here in Dallas to get 8.8 gears installed...

Yeah and I called them on it and asked why it was 850 for 4hrs labor. There answer was "uhhhhhh, welllll, uhhhhhhh" .

They hate it when the consumer has too much information.

    Oooo! Where's the site Tom?

    P.S. How ya been lately?!

I was quoted at $650 around here...I didn't think under $500 was possible around here unless I went closer towards ATL.

    Good, Cheap, Fast...

This thread reminded me of the old saying:

    Good, Cheap and Fast....

You can only pick two of the three...

In my book, always be sure to pick Good. The other two may never be there when you go to choose!

Also, if it hasn't been mentioned yet, be sure to pick up an installation kit with shims for the reinstall. They may have tried to reuse the existing shims which may be the entire reason for the whining and howling.

(Hmmm... reminds me of my first wife, but we won't go there...)

HUh,, $650 for doing what? If it is for under the car stuff----no way--!! I'd go to see Scott at Team first before letting anyone touch my( your) car their in your town---nobody knows that much there vs Alt...and you need to see that place ( Team Ford) anyway...it's what dealerships should be like everywhere!.....it's worth the trip in itself....Tom..

Usually it is an already established wear pattern in a different rear end that can cause gear whine. Carrier shims can be reused, however I've seen them break in half from being put in too tightly. Forget about reusing pinion shims if the measurement numbers aren't there.

When getting "used gears" installed, you will need: a crush collar, pinion shims of many different measements, a pinion seal, 3 quarts of synthetic gear oil, and friction modifier. Some places even recommend replacing the pinion nut. That one is up to you.

Just my .02 and then some.

We had a meet a few months back at a speed shop in Cary. I'll bet they can beat that deal and the owner and employees appeared to be competent. Can anyone refresh my memory on the name of the shop?
