Radar Jammer?

OK, I thought that it was legal to sell LASER jammers, but not RADAR jammers. The product at this link claims to jam them both. What's up, just another internet scam?

Scam-o-rama. You're basically opting in to a marketing email list. Jamming Radar is quite illegal and is a federal offense if memory serves.

Lidar/Laser, completely different story. While some counties have outlawed Laser Jammers specifically, Light is governed by the FDA, not the FCC. There are no laws on the books with respect to interference with a light source.

That being said, if a LEO figures out that you jammed his lidar gun and wasn't too thrilled about the prospect, he could charge you with interference with sworn duties of an officer, though it'd be pretty easy to swat it down in court as lidar guns can be jammed or errored out by natural causes such as reflected sunlight.

My modus operandi is generally, Laser jammer alerts, I check my speed and adjust as necessary, then shut it off so he can get a nice clean reading of my speed, eliminating any need for him to pull my butt over or for him to revert to the good 'ol visual estimation.

In short, Laser Jamming = Ok, Radar Jamming = Bad Mojo.

Now, how did they come up with that connection?? Too much LSD in the 60's, I suspect.

Actually I recently read in our statute that it is illegal to "employ any device that can interfere with an LEO's ability to gauge a vehicle's speed," or somesuch.

That is clear yet vague, so who knows what a court would decide.

If you chromed your whole Marauder you would be doing them a favor. It would be incredibly easy to find you then.

You want something that either absorbs or jams, not reflects.

The reason some states require a front plate has nothing to do with the ID of the vehicle. It's to give them a flat, reflective target for laser. The MM would be almost invisible from front radar (until close range) without the front plate. That's why newer license plates are totally flat without even theindentations for the letters/digits. It's also a more reflective surface now, too.

Ever take a laser pointer and point it at something black?

So if you got one of those rounded plastic license plate covers for your front plate it would be less reflective?

Yes. But most places deem it illegal to cover your plate with anything, clear plastic or even those new reflective sprays.

What Logan said. Light is governed by the FDA because it's a health concern to people's eyes. Can you go down to your local radio station and mess with their frequency, or build your own on that? Same premise with Radar.

With reference to the plate issue, I NEVER put a plate on the front of my car for the reasons stated here. CT just came out with a new one and it something like 10,000 times more reflective than the old.

I'll take the equipment violation any day verses being that much easier to be picked up on laser.

One final point, in case anyone is worried. In all of my life and after all of the tickets I have gotten I have never once seen a cop walk up to the front of my car to look for a plate. My thinking is that the very nature of a traffic stop is such that doing so might put the cop in more danger. And, perhaps, he thinks it is just an equipment violation, too.

Cedar Falls now has laser!!

Hey John and Jason!

Cedar Falls just gunned me with LIDAR on Greenhill Road! Must be that accident fiasco causing the upgraded hardware.

*I* of course don't care about laser, my Escort ZR 3 shifter took care of officer "gun happy." I wasn't speeding and the kid was in the car, but it's SO nice to have the feeling of invulnerability!

He had the weirdest look on his face as I let him have the reading about 100 feet away. (two hits of the mute button disables the shifter so they can get a reading so they don't necessarily think something is up)

I had a grin rivaled only by my drive home the day I bought the Bluesmobile. I was doing the Eddie Murphy "Beverly Hills Cop" guffaw (not the laugh, the one where he sneaks up on Taggart and Rosewood in the unmarked)

He was hiding in that little inlet that goes nowhere when I was headed the other way.

Color me happy as a clam. I haven't used my shifter in months! Now I'll get to use it almost daily as that is the route to/from kid's daycare.

I can't WAIT to use it again!
