Some More Recent Photography.

Including our judged and awarded student art show (at which I won 2nd place for the same photo I entered in Assignment #1: Choices), we have art shows that all art students do. It is only judged by the teacher who has that student for art and the only thing you win is a 100 in the grade book.

5 of the pieces have to be from work done this year. My art work is pathetic so I decided to spice it up with some decent photography.

Each photo is printed with a border just less than 1/4 of an inch in thickness and has about an inch and a half to two inches of white space left on the paper.

I can see how some of these are lacking in one area or another. But if you guys want to share your thoughts just incase I missed anything important, let me know!

You have a good eye and photography is a craft (meaning the more you do it the better you get at it).

I just think you are looking at the larger picture rather than the image that will 'define' your picture. For example

You labeled the first photo 'bowling for soup guitarist'. The photo is OK, not bad not great. But inside the photo there is more going on. The guy is playing an instrument - he is connected - he is covered in tattoos that most likely define him - who he is. He is the center of the photo, yet he is being upstage by the lights and stuff around him - not to mention he is out of focus. If you took this same shot on a tri-pod with a long lens closer on him - it would give us a detail we do not normally see.

As for the other photos - again - i think your universe is too large - 'dodge truck' it is really on the front and headlights -

'downtown building' - this photo really focuses on the sky and clouds, not the building.

'my friend julie' - very good photo, but again my eyes do not go to julie, they go to the arches which at further sight seems to be held up by julie.

Anyway, every image needs to have a name - find a mona lisa for each picture, but be accurate as to what story your picture is telling.

I just titled them very quickly, so that's not exactly what I was trying to capture.

I almost cried at that concert because I don't have a large lens or the money for it and there was NO way a tripod was going to happen.

My shutters had to be low, because my lowest aperature (4.5) wasn't good enough, hence the blur.

But I was being pushed around by kids the whole time so that was the best I could do, not like I had a photography pass or anything.

However what you mentioned would definitely have made the shot idea, and had I had the oppourtunity I would have taken it.

I like 'em and I agree with the ^^^^^^^^^^. My favorite was Julie and the arches ... very nice composition. It kinda reminded me of your earlier shot of the brick horseshoe waterfall. Second pick was the building and sky scene. Third was the Airport secret ... unique view of the baggage handling conveyor. I didn't even pay any attention to the title/captions until the 2nd review.

I missed this part, and again I see what you were saying, but those weren't quite titles, or something I would use as such. I love the b/w with my friend photo, I think it's great and the focus wasn't on her, and the truck was just an interesting perspective, as was the building.

They were just short ways of saying what was there.

Ok, I retitled the photos. I'll chat about my thoughts on them later.

Also, I thought the focus of the guitarist wasn't too bad for 400ISO, 1/20 shutter and f4.5.

And the message I'm trying to explain is that this guy is singularly focusing on himself and his instrument, not the crowd, however the band has moved aside momentarily so he can have his 15 seconds of fame (hence all of the space aroung him.) As the crowd and music may fade for a moment, his eyes can see no farther than his fretboard. But we, the audience, see all around him, and all that he's creating. By capturing this as a photo, we see where he is in his own climax.

Don't argue, and don't make excuses, James; listen and learn. That's a pro giving you free advice; something that's hard to come by these days.

As for the building? I see a face in the clouds, sort of looking at the corner, about 45 degrees, centered. Looks like a guy with sideburns ....to bad it isn't the Holy Mother, you could sell it on EBAY for a fortune.

I didn't intend an argument, but as Cruztaker is said, it's not simply the photo, but the "extif" information behind it that's worth a thousand words.

What I stated was my shutter and aperature and ISO. While I agree the picture was a tad "blurry" I meant it to be as such, and it actually isn't bad considering the conditions.

I also could not have had the equiptment he said I should have had, in any way shape or form. I had to work with what I had available. That's not only an excuse, but a necessary one. I'm saying what was and was not possible given the conditions.

Had I taken that picture at say, 1/50 of a second instead of 1/20, then I'd understand someone being critical of the composition.

Nor am I trying to sound stuck up but I was critisized for the blur, which again I intended.

Other than that, I didn't argue and accepted the advice given. I even gave more appropriate titles to my work and explained what the picture of the guitarist was supposed to "mean." Something which I have been explicitly asked.

Actually, I liked the guitarist, and feel it tells a story: he's having his moment with the audience and the other guys cleared the stage for his special solo performance. Once again I'll remark about the outstanding color ballance and meetering from those Nikon cameras. The time will come, I'm sure, when digital photography will surpass the quality of even the finest films. Perhaps it already has.

BTW, I put an HP photosmart 7960 on line, and just printed some 4x6 photo's of the grand children that we scanned then sent on-line to another computer. ~2.5MB Bitmap files that are the equal of the origonal prints.

Well what do you know! I use the 7960 as well! I LOVE the stuff this printer can print!
