That's pretty amusing given the fact that Italian police hardly ever stop anyone for speeding... I have been there over 30 times and always rent a car. The posted limit on the highway is 130 kph but no one goes that slow. Typical highway averages are 170-240 kph. They have radar stations set up in a few locations but the italian mentality is that it's unfair to 'trap' motorists, so they post signs that a radar station is ahead. If you speed through a radar station, you will get a ticket mailed to you promptly (promptly in Italy mean about 8 months - I know 'cause i got one about 7 years ago when i missed seeing the sign - the ticket was around $90 for going 190kph).

I have even been so bold as to whizz by police on the highway knowing that they will not stop me. They dont even look up. Italian police are not the brightest and best police force on the plant - they always travel in pairs, the joke goes, one to write and one to read.

About 5 years ago there was a famous case where a young American boy died over there (not car related) and his family donated their son's organs to help other children. This was the first time that an organ transplant had been done with so much publicity [it had been a real taboo to donate organs previously] and ever since this occured, more and more people have donated organs. Like the article said, it would used to patrol one route on the highway, but I suspect it's main purpose is to transport organs to hospitals.

I only had ONE accident in all the times i was there - I was on my way back to the airport and had averaged 200-220kph for hours and I hit a small piece of ice as i was slowing for the exit. The car spun around a few times and all 4 tires blew out.

I was alone and it took 90 minutes before anyone came to give me a lift the rest of the way to the airport (yeah, even some police passed by but did not stop!)

The only part of the article I read stated that...If I am about to die, I'd rather have a Lamborghini on it's way to save me than an overblown F350...:rolleyes:

It was not unusual on the Autobahn in Germany to see the polizei using Porshe 911 Careras. Understand that they also some twin turbos.

That's what I loved about Germany. I had a fan belt break on the autobahn, and in under 5 min the ADAC (German AAA) was on site. not even a phone call. Within 20 min I was rollin' again.

Pontif is a name or title. the Pontif is the Pope himself. The Midor (sp?) is the hat.

Pontiff = bishop (especially the Pope -- the bishop of Rome)
Mitre = the bishop's headdress (i.e. hat)

This thread has drifted way off topic --- :shake:

Um, the words lighten up come to mind. This post went three days untouched and we are still on things Italian. Doesn't sound way off topic to me. Be a do gooder and go find something about Fiat or Alpha Romeo police cars and get us back on track.
