Hi, I was wondering how you all were wiring a backup camera to automatically come on with shifted into reverse. My headunit(Pioneer 4100NEX) has a wire for reverse sensor, and I was wondering how I could wire that to the reverse gear so the head unit will automatically switch over when I put it in reverse.

The head unit should have designated cables/wires for a backup camera.

Indeed it does. But, I'm confused if that should be wired to a reverse wire or the camera itself.

Do you have the camera yet?

In fact, it has a RCA video in for the camera as well. But I'm assuming connecting the camera to that and then the camera to a reverse light wire won't automatically switch the reciever to back up camera mode, right?

edit: I do have the camera in hand. Esky car camera. SKU: 181-80170-25

I think the rca plug, and the sensor wire you should be good to go.

Purple/white on head unit to black/pink at drivers kick panel. Obviously test for power there with back up lights on prior to wiring.

I remember tapping into the reverse light to make it come on when in reverse but then that kept popping a fuse for power steering and a/c. It didn't do that at first for a long time then I had that problem. Good luck!

Unplugged that wire I had tapped in and never used it again! Cameras kept getting water inside. Went thru 3, all different models. They all fogged up n held moisture. I didn't have much luck but this was back in 2008, I'm sure they have better quality ones now.

For most headunits this what you need to do:

Install the backup camera
Connect the camera's power and ground to the reverse lights so the camera has power when the car is shifted into reverse
Run the video cable (RCA) up to the headunit.
Connect the RCA to the correct input of the headunit.
You need to connect the reverse sensing wire from the headunit to the reverse wire going back to the reverse lights. The wire can be found in one of the harnesses in the drivers side kick panel. This wire tells the headunit to switch to the backup camera source.

BTW... your install manual for the headunit should have all this info in it.

You look in your factory wiring manual.
