The company I work for has an industrial size one with a REAL laser hooked to a robot. Have to wear special glaases to even be in the same room with it. They use it for cleaning large forming tools.

Been doing this for years the old fashioned way. Electroylsis-----perfect for motorcyle or car gas tanks.
The two dollar method I use is: Put the part in a solution of baking soda wash and water or, if it's a gas tank, fill with said solution. Using a 12 volt battery charger, place the negative lead on the tank frame and the positive on a homemade electrode insulated from the metal tank and submerge it in the water. Do this in a well ventilated area. It will pull the rust off the metal and to the electrode. Every 15-30 minutes, clean the rust off the electrode and, if really bad, replace the water periodically, if needed.
I recently cleaned a rare, unavailable, very rusty old OEM Datsun gas tank on a car I'm restoring. It took two days because it was so bad, but came out like brand new. I then coated it with a very expensive epoxy. It will outlast the rest of the car's life now.
