Went to remove the EGR to clean it up and see if it helps with the rough idle ive been getting, thought maybe the valve was stuck open a bit. Anyway when it came time to get the nut off the exhuast pipe that sucker wouldn't budge. Ive got some PB Blaster im going to use, but any other recommendations? Channel locks and a hammer, a big wrench and just force it? I dont want to strip anything. Ive also heard you can use some penetrating oils to help loosen it up. I dont have a torch to heat it with so any suggestions would be helpful. thanks.
Uh......it un-threads at the EGR valve.

Oh ok, so that big nut doesnt move at all? Bit of a newb so sorry if I got the dissasembly procedure wrong. Used ALLDATA to help guide me but didnt see the exact step i was looking for. So after all the bolts and stuff are out the entire EGR valve just unscrews?? thx.

The best way to loosen the nut on the pipe is with the judicious heat of an acetylene torch. It will then easily unscrew with a wrench. Always reinstall with anti-seize on the threads.
Torch work requires training, experience, a proper tip, and a correct flame for the job at hand.
Technically, I believe the MM shop manual tells us the EGR valve cannot be cleaned, and requires replacement when it is defective.
I understand you don't have a torch. In this case, it makes a difficult job, very simple and easy.

I'll try the PB Blaster and a wrench and see. I'd have to remove it to replace anyway so we'll see. I saw another thread where someone got it off without using heat. Any other tips besides torching the thing?

Go buy yourself a small propane torch at Home Depot or the like.
They come in handy around the shop.
This one is $35 but you can get the ones without the autostart for $15 or so.

Soak it with PB Blaster for a couple of days, run the car so the EGR gets hot, try loosening the nut after driving the car. DO NOT BURN YOURSELF!

Mapp gas is hotter than propane and would heat a little quicker, but neither one works very well if the part has much mass to it.
I've never tried one of these kits that combine oxygen and fuel, but it might be a low cost way to get concentrated heat, which is what you want >>>

Propane and propane accessories. I'll get that! It appears nothing short of heating that nut will break it loose so that's what I'll do. Thanks for the tips guys. And I have no "training" with a small torch but I cant imagine its that difficult. Light, concentrate flame and point at what you need to heat. Then work it with the wrench a bit to break it loose. Seems simple enough. I'm hoping this EGR cleaning clears up this idle issue I've been having. Thanks.

This is an awesome piece to have, a bit tricky to learn but once you figure it out it's simple. The small red oxy tanks run out fast, but its a cheap setup that gets you close to Oxy/Acet and works well on small mass parts such as the EGR tube. I have two of these, and have yet to buy a real Oxy/Acet setup for my home repairs. A BFH and this have worked good enough for me over the years.
FYI its also called a plumbers torch, typically used to do brazing and small pipe welding.

LOCAL PARTS STORE sells mapp gas $20 bucks (heat is your friend)

+1 on the map gas torch being the best $40 you could spend
+1 on oxy/acetylene being much more effective but less reasonable to acquire and use for your average backyard'er
If heat does not work, just stop trying. The tube is not clogged, and it is not worth damaging the nut, tube, or manifold.
Why oh ****g why are you trying to remove the egr tube from the exhaust manifold?
It un screws from the egr valve

Zack,
I think you misunderstood or I obviously didn't explain correctly. I'm not trying to remove it from the exhaust manifold. That would be a PITA, and make no sense. Let me include an image to show what I'm referring to.
I want to remove that in order to clean the EGR to hopefully clean up my idle a bit. I've heard if they stick open a bit it can cause this. Anyway thanks for helping. Let me know if I should be looking elsewhere for this problem. I hear the slight miss out of both pipes. Not a tuck tuck tuck thing but enough to know what it is. My next step is new IAC I guess.

If I recall a 1 1/16" wrench fits nicely on it and only requires a good solid tap on it with your other hand. It will snap free.
Once it's loose remove the connections and the two 10mm bolts and the big nut will walk out by hand.
Reinstall in exact opposite. (Starting with threading in the big nut)
Anything other than a nice long good fitting wrench for leverage is simply wasting time.

Just trying to respond to your post where you clearly didn't understand what I was trying to do. No need to be snarky, just looking for some good advice. Everyone else seemed to comprehend what I wrote. Nevertheless, I got good advice from them and only responded to you further because of your cute little quote below.
"Why oh ****g why are you trying to remove the egr tube from the exhaust manifold? It un screws from the egr valve". I wasn't, had you read more carefully.
I'll close this out now, thanks to Martyo and all the others that offered sound advice. I appreciate your expertise Zack but not your earlier comments.

Just curious about the original rough idle problem. Have you removed the throttle body and cleaned both sides of it already?
mremington
04-26-2016, 07:06 AM
Only cleaned the outside basically just the throttle plates that open and kinda in and around there. Did not take it off yet and clean the entire TB. I will though as I did notice a slight improvement especially in throttle response. I'll take it off and clean it good this weekend. Any other suggestions on the slight rough idle I'd be glad to hear. Thanks!
