View Full Version : Transmission cooler?

I was doing a few longevity mods on my Marauder and I want to add an aftermarket transmission cooler. Found a couple of good options, but does anyone know what size inlet I should choose? Don't know what size hoses we have... Anybody know? Thanks!
Did you know the Marauder already has a transmission cooler? If you are using a stock torque converter the factory set up is more than adequate.
A higher stall speed converter generates more heat so the system may benefit from another cooler, if your car is so equipped, but opinions vary.

Cooler tranny fluid = longer tranny life.
I plumbed my aftermarket cooler in series with the existing cooler. Fluid exits the existing cooler, enters the aftermarket cooler then goes back into the tranny.

I did this as well, except I added a thermal bypass - so if after exiting factory cooler the transfluid is at 180F or more it gets to go for a ride in my 2nd trans cooler.
Trans coolers by "long" are recommended.

I eliminated the factory trans/power steering cooler, and installed a Derale remote trans cooler with fan , 165* trans thermostat , and a Derale power steering cooler , transmission runs in the 160* - 170* range with a 3K stall converter.

The OEM is more than adequate. If you are concerned about your trans just change your fluid more often.
Due to a high coolant temp condition I removed the factory trans cooler after cutting off the bottom PS cooler and affixing it to the front sway bar. I mounted a 16" by 16" cooler behind the grill.
I have a 3,500 stall. I have had the fluid analyzed and aok. I change every 15-20K. Trans lasted 95K miles and 70+ 1/4 passes until it needed a rebuild.
Be careful you don't block flow to your rad increasing your coolant temps.

I disagree , the stock trans cooler isn't adequate with a high stall converter, it tends to run hot on the streets.

I have a Tru-Cool Max trans cooler (p/n LPD47391) installed inline after the factory trans cooler. My trans has 250k+ miles on it, PI 3500 stall converter and deep trans pan installed for the last 175k miles, trans cooler and Jmod for the last 100k+ miles.
It's a mod that is really only a benefit, I recommend adding it Inline after the factory cooler and if you do not have a trans pan with a drain plug on it that would be wise to get as well.

That didn't answer my original question on what size inlet I should use....

~40K miles and 80+ 1/4 mile runs with High Stall, OEM Trans Cooler, OEM trans and no issues.
What are your coolant temps in traffic at 20-30mph when ambient is 95*?
Looks like you are blocking a lot of air flow to the rad.

The Tru-Cool (largest size, forget the part number) stacked plate is the way to go if you need a transmission cooler, I believe the inlet can be adapted to 3/8" hose barb. You can check your transmission temperature using a bluetooth OBDII dongle and the Torque Android app.
It would be unusual for a stock car that isn't used for towing to require additional transmission cooling, the stock cooler is decent. If you tow or plan to install a stall converter the cooler is a good idea.

OP - If you have a higher stall torque convertor install an additional cooler.
If you don't have a higher stall convertor install an another cooler anyway..... you can't go wrong.
I installed mine using the fitting provided in the kit.

I used the Hayden High Performance Transmission Oil Cooler. I believe it was the smaller one. I did not use the thru the radiator mounting system. I made brackets.

Yeah your car will run cool down the track forcing air through the cooler.
My coolant temps in traffic at 20-30mph at 95* is righr around 175* , I'm running a 170* thermostat , and a custom aluminum radiator with 12" dual spal fans , coolant temps are no longer an issue.

So did I! And that's where I stopped. [emoji6]

I must admit that six speed is very tempting! :coolman:

It sucks, don't do it. [emoji4]
I've been meaning to get a power steering cooler hooked back up but it's been a year now with none and I really don't notice it getting all that hot?

Why not replace the stock with the Tru-Cool 47391? Why run it in series with the stock unit?

Because I tow with the car, and the power steering cooler is part of the stock trans cooler. In worst case situations (towing uphill, high altitude thin air, 70 MPH) I would see trans temps get into the 200 - 210 range for a few minutes.
What I did was more in the context of a towing upgrade, I'll probably remove the stocker to accommodate a supercharger and intercooler.
If you're doing a complete heat exchanger reconfiguration up front with a supercharger intercooler, new radiator, etc, I would probably ditch the stock cooler and see if something slick is available that has three oil circuits for trans, engine oil and power steering. Lots of custom heat exchanger companies out there. And to leave no money unspent, I would do a transmission oil thermostat from Tru-cool as well. It is pretty easy to over-cool in cold weather. I don't see a need for the thermostat with engine or power steering oil.

Anyone ever use Dorale Performance (http://derale.com/products/fluid-coolers) products?
The remote mount (http://derale.com/products/fluid-coolers/transmission/remote-mount2013-10-28-09-53-271226240719) transmission cooing units, with fan, looks like a good idea.

I run a Derale fan along with others here. Super smooth.
As for the factory trans/power steering cooler I ditched mine altogether. First the trans side 3 1/2 years ago when adapted to manual trans, then finally removed the whole unit to clear up space for a different style/size/location radiator a year ago last March.
No issues at all eliminating the power steering cooler. The fluid tests to be damn near same temp immediately exiting the freeway as it did before. No cooked smell or premature color darkening either. No plans on installing one.
