View Full Version : Humming almost grinding sound/vibration

I need help diagnosing an issue with my 03.
While driving I have a constant heavy humming sound, almost like im driving down the street with crazy offroad tires, it sounds like loud road noise. The sound increases in volume and pitch the faster I go. The strangest part to me, if the road curves to the right the sound will go away until the steering is returned to center. Left curves do not have this same effect.
I am not great at diagnosing things. I do know the brakes have no effect on the sound, the front end and steering feel nice and tight, no slop.
Any idea?

my blind guess would be to check out the rear end as the 2003 marauder have the issue with the soft axels..

Wheel bearing? Axle bearing?

Just found a post on a Volkswagon forum...i know i know.
But same symptoms as me. This is the rresponse:
"It is a wheel bearing, for certain.
When you are turning, the load transfers to the outside of the circle, ie when making a right turn, the right side bearings are carrying significantly less load than the left side bearings at the outside of the turn. If the noise disappears during a right turn, it is a right side bearing that is faulty - you should be able to tell if it is from the front or the rear by where the noise is coming from."
Seem logical?

Buy both front passenger side and drivers side hub bearings, as soon as you replace one, the other is certain to fail soon. Just like headlights
You can do a brake job at the same time, you will have it all apart anyway
Cheers

If it is actually the rear bearing, would that be related to the soft axles?

Hard to say, might be, might not..have to see if a groove is worn in the axle shaft. Are you leaking diff fluid on the inside of the rear rim? Don't let it get that far or you will have to change brake pads as well as gear lube will ruin them.

I need to jack it up and take a look. This is very helpful on what to look for. Thanks!

If it was an axle shaft bearing, those don't usually goes away completely on a turn...but still possible, depending on how long it's been this way.

Had a friend at a shop take a look at the car real quick. Front wheel bearing has a ton of play. The alignment is also way off on that wheel.
Rear wheel has a ton of in and out play, axle bearing?
Car is parked now until I can have it repaired. If im doing rear axles, its getting 31 spline with matching trac-lok and 4.10s.

Rear wheel has a ton of in and out play, axle bearing?Define "ton"...it's a C-clip, so there is some axial play...you're more concerned with radial play (up/down).

It has a lot more than the other side. I know some play is normal, but it seems beyond that.

My plan of action is to replace the front wheel bearing, have the alignment done since it is noticeably off, and then see how it is.

Two questions.
1. Does brand matter much on front wheel bearings? I see them priced anywhere from $50 a piece to almost $200. Advance has Moog and Driveworks.
2. Even if drivers side appears to be fine, should I still replace?

The answer to #2 is that if one side is gone, the other probably isn't too far behind, so it's a good idea.
How many miles? If it's fairly low, then replacing the driver's side is probably not needed at this time.

Thats what I have always been told, just wanted another opinion.
Car has 154,000, not low miles by any means! Lol
