what's the best way to clean up engine sludge????

I will be pulling this motor to give it a good cleaning.

I picked up an aviator motor to hold me over.

How many miles?

Have you taken off the cam covers or timing chain covers to see if sludge is the problem?

Are you SURE you have low oil pressure? You do know the factory gauge is a fake, right?

I removed both cam and timing covers

The car came with a real electrical gauge, I installed a mechanical one to make sure I'm getting an accurate reading.

It purrrs when started but when it starts to bleed the pressure, SOMETIMES it dips below 20, around the 15 - 10psi range.

Is there sludge build up? Oil pressure gets lower as it warms up..mine is near 100 at cold start up idle, but will be 20 at warm idle and higher under excelleration

Sometimes I get perfect pressure.

Another weird thing that happens, when I rev, it doesn't always have effect on the oil pressure.

Looks like it never had regular oil changes, i can only imagine what the oil pick up tube looks like.

I have no personal experience with any of these.

Use at your own risk!

Marvel Mystery Oil

Kerosene

ATF

Seafoam

Good quality motor oil with oil & filter changes every 1000 to 1500 miles

Commercial internal engine cleaner

Internet search turns up many things and procedures.

Running an engine cleaning product in that engine could possibly plug off the oil pickup screen causing engine failure. I wouldn't do it if it were mine.

OMG do not use kerosine! Use Auto-Rx (google it) - it will safely clean out the sludge. You might need 2 treatments.

i'd prefer to clean this motor out of the vehicle because i have two other motors i can put in. i wonder if i can pour Auto-Rx over it and use a scraper and shop vac to get it at least 80% clean, then change the oil pump and pickup.

Nope, with Auto-Rx- you drive it clean, needs to be running for 500 miles after you put it in, then change oil and start a "rinse cycle"

Take before pics and after if you do this...

If you try to de-sludge it driving it, there is a good chance it will kill it.

There's just too much sludge, this motor still runs smooth and makes good pressure sometimes, i'd hate to damage it by all the sludge breaking free and clogging the oil passages and pick up.

i will still use this product while doing a manual clean and take before and after pics tho.

that's what i'm afraid of.The thing that scared me about yours is the fluctuating oil pressure. Is it caused by sludge getting to the pressure sensor or is the pick up screen partially plugged? If it is caused by the pick up screen we have a pretty good idea what will happen very soon. Cleaning all that gunk out and sending it through a dirty pick up screen and through the oil pump might not be a good thing. Also I would think that the oil filter would get plugged pretty quickly causing the oil to bypass which is also not good.

The only way to clean it when removed is to disassemble the entire motor and hot tank it.

You don't have clear knowledge how this motor works, if there is sludge in the top....how do you suspect is got there?? Osmosis???

That sludge is throughout the motor already, your best bet is to try a cleaner that will dissolve it, not just move chunks around.....gheesseee :shake:

i bought a used explorer once, oil light came on (low pressure), wasn't draining through the screen fast enough. i used the silver can of motor flush at auto zone before every oil change. issue went away.

if your pulling it i would just have someone disassemble it and go through it properly. just my .02 (it was a deal, congrats) :beatnik:

I have seen first had the results of trying to clean an engine that was full of sludge and it resulted in a ruined engine.

If the gunk is treated and it dissolves slowly in very small bits things might go well, but if it dissolves and chunks fall off, guess where they are going to go. They will go to the oil pan. I would think it could go either way on this engine, but if it were mine I wouldn't treat it. Remember, your mileage may vary and so may your opinion.

my objective is to get as much of the sludge out so that the cleaning additive can do it's job with ease. these motors are expensive and not easy to find, rather be safe than sorry.

but since this is an extra motor i might DISASSEMBLE!!, or sell it and put the money in my built short block.

I would never let anything I own get in that condition, but I have had good results with cleaner on fleet vehicles that got their oil changed every 30k or so.....

Besides, if it's that far along, it probably needs rebuilt anyhow....
