Sounds the loudest on passenger side behind pulleys.
Any and all ideas appreciated. Going to the shop in the AM.

Sounds like an ejected spark plug.

Check you blew a spark plug out. But it does sound like a broken valve.

x3 for a blown out plug..
If not, remove the belt and see if it disappears

Could it be a Timing Chain Tensioner Failure.
Is the noise coming from the front middle of the head.
I had that same noise on the passenger side.& found a Tensioner Failure & loose chain.
Any other symptoms, a misfire by any chance?

So I woke up bright & early, pulled the forward 2 plugs on the passenger side, since that's where the noise seems to be loudest, one at a time, no change & plugs look fine. Reinstalled plugs & cops & pulled the belt off. Started it up and still ticking.
Haven't looked under it for a manifold leak yet.
Probably will call AAA to tow it a mile to the shop unless anyone can give this non-mechanic any other things to try.
Think an OBD scanner may show something?

Won't show anything unless the check engine light is on.

I take it when you had the passenger coil cover off, 3 and 4 didnt look abnormal either? I'd pull the driver coil cover and see if it had a blown plug, you'd know by a destroyed coil. Otherwise leaning on timing chain area now. Good luck

Pull all the plugs on that pass side, sure sounds like compression leaking out to me

That sounds like the noise my stock engine made right before I threw a rod. I thought it might be a timing chain tensioner so I took it apart and replaced the tensioners. Same noise with new tensioner, took it for a quick blast and threw a rod through the block.
Good luck.

Agreed, sounds like that to me as well, which is why I asked about a misfire.

Well folks, it's a bent rod. They quoted me a remanufactured motor w/3 year warranty installed for $6700 or a used motor (94,000 miles) with a 100 day warranty for 3670 installed. First option is too much and second I don't trust the used motor.
So I'm thinking of selling it as a project car and looking for another.
Sad, sad day in New England. Especially after I put in 410s and new tires not too long ago. :(
Advice, anyone?

Go to a different shop
Rods dont bend unless you over supercharge them or hydro lock the engine

The rods is not bent, powdered metal rods break.

I wonder if a leaky head gasket did that?

Pete, please understand I'm not raining on your mechanic, but do get a second opinion...rods don't just bend for no reason.

Have they done a compression check? It sounds top-endy to me.

I misunderstood. Just called the shop back. They said they can't tell without braking it down but did say it's the bottom end, possibly connecting rod, etc.
I'll tow it out of the shop tonight and look for a shop with more of a specialty in this area.
It could be as simple as a cam gear sprocket bolt coming loose.
Disconnect the coil packs one by one when the engine is running.
When the noise gets softer, you found the culprit cylinder.

This^^^^^Always.
My favorite stethoscope is still a 5 ft piece of 5/8" heater hose. Hold one end to your ear and go to probing with the other end.
Just my 2 cents worth: My 46 years of turning wrenches says to me it is not a connecting rod problem. The heater hose method will home you right in on it in just a few seconds. Good luck.

OK, so I'm not a mechanic but the shop called my this morning and it appears to be a problem with one of the "tappets" needs to be replaced? Not getting enough oil pressure (seal maybe)? They are ordering a set for $250 and it should be done this week. He said it's pretty common in these engines. I've never heard of it....but like I said, I'm not a mechanic.
The oil passage in the back of the head could be blocked, causing low oil pressure to the followers.

There's an oil restrictor, IIRC it's on the back of the passenger side, that has been known to clog.
So yeah...what Zack said... :)

How much did this repair cost (if you don't mind me asking)? A 3 week wait is crazy but definitely beats paying $6700 to replace an good engine.

For the passenger side set of tappets/lifters, diagnosis, gasket, oil change, & labor, just above $800.

No substitute for quality diagnostics and workmanship. I'm glad you followed through and found the real problem. I just love it when things end well.

Holy CRAP.
500 in labor for a 2-3 hour job.

Not much competition around these parts. Most of the shops here don't want to deal with it and the few that will, I don't trust.

Jeez!I'm sure that there was some diagnostic time in there too
