View Full Version : Anyone here use Capacitors with your audio system?

I installed one after bridging my amp because my volt Guage would drop low to like less than 12v when I turn my system up, and lights would dim as well during hard bass notes. I installed a 1.2 farad Cap, but it seems as if there is no change.
I'm going this morning to have my battery and Altenator checked.

Still do it when you bring the engine rpm up off idle?

For the most part yes. I just installed the cap yesterday and haven't spent a lot of time riding, but I will in a few minutes

I think you might do better to check the gauge of the wiring you've got to your stereo system. If the wiring is inadequate even a large capacitor isn't going to help you. I believe this is why a lot of the monster sound system installations you seen utilize another battery in the trunk.

4 ga. All the way to the cap and amp for the subs. Then 8 ga to my 4 channel amp for my rear and door speakers. I'm running 2 10" subs which are competition 10's, and a fosgate t5002 amp. I mean I could simply Un bridge the amp and just run 1 channel per sub, but it sounds so much better and hits so hard now.

Sounds like your battery is weak. Remember, the alternator does not power your accessories, your battery does. If you've got a weak battery, the alternator is going to work at max duty cycle to try and keep a steady charge in the battery.
A t5002 shouldn't be pulling down your voltage that much. I'm running an Elemental Designs nine.1 mono amp which is rated at 1,200 watts @ 12 volts into a 1 ohm load powering 2 Image Dynamics IDQ 12" subs in sealed enclosures. With the A/C on max, cooling fan running, system as high as tolerable, my voltage rarely touches 12 volts. At night with the headlights on I get some dimming, but not much.
The first thing you need to do is get more 4ga power wire and upgrade the wiring from your B+ post from your alternator to your battery. Leave the factory wire in place and add your 4ga run direct to the battery. Then run another 4ga lead from the ground post of your battery to somewhere convenient on the engine, and also to the chassis.
Do a google search for "big 3 upgrade" if my attempt at explaining it didn't work :D

You did. I had the battery and altenator checked this morning and they both are good. Maybe it need to just do the upgrade you speak of. Been riding for an hour or so checking the system out and possibly found a fuel pump issue. LOL. Gotta love older cars. Barely made it home
