So, the alternator light came on in my 78 LTD. I replaced the voltage regulator, but was still only getting 12.6V with the engine running (same voltage before swapping the regulator). When revving, the alt light would dim or turn off, depending on the RPMs. I then replaced the alternator, but now the charging voltage is 11.96V. Revving doesn't seem to help. I'm not sure where to look now. Anyone have a suggestion? I don'tkknow if it was related, but I also had a parasitic power draw. Some lead with a fusable link was drawing 4A with the engine shut off. After disconnecting that lead the alternator issue seemed to start, but was not resolved by reconncting the lead. That lead also does not appear to lead to the alternator. Really not sure what the deal is.

Is the regulator external?
Before you buy more parts, check the "charge" wire leading back from alt to battery. It can short out, cause the voltage to be meh

Check the wires to the external regulator,

Report back

Never mind. I'm just an idiot that switched two of the leads when putting in the new alternator. Switched them just a moment ago and it's all good now.
