View Full Version : Stuck Manifold Bolts

I have the motor out of my MM and am going to be installing Stainless work headers when the motor goes back in. I have 3 manifold bolt that are giving me hell!:mad2: Any suggestions on how i can get these bad boys out?
I have doused them with PB blaster for like 3 weeks.... Still no luck...

Yea with MAP Gas. Snapped the Head off...

Normally the head breaks off but the studs come right out after the manifold is off.

Always use new hardware when installing headers. I like to use new OE studs and lock nuts found at Advance in 10 packs.

BTW the headers will clear if you put them on before you reinstall the engine. Just keep in mind three or four studs on the passenger side will need to be cut down to make removal possible later on if needed.

Lisle makes a nice set of broken stud extractors that work very well.

The one real problem I had with my Ford pickup truck was extracting the exhaust manifold bolts from the heads. PB Blaster is good; melted candle wax but the best is transmission oil and acetone. Remember all flammable items. A skilled welder can heat up the steel stud by welding a nut on the stud and extracting it. Good luck! It is much easier with the engine out of the car. Find someone with experience removing broken studs is my best advice. Heli Coils is what others say is an option but I would avoid with sound extraction experience.

I never use a regular steel nut when doing header work.

The front studs on the V-10 in my truck keep snapping, maybe I can go this route next time I mess with it.:beer:

Was thinking of trying to weld a Nut on the stud... Anyone ever tried that?

I used what Zack posted in addition to a stainless stud solution (its a complete package). I don't drive my car except on nice days though.

+1 on the Amazon Metric Screw and Tool stud and nuts sets, I use them on all three of my cars and they are great, available in V-10 10 packs and V-8 8 packs, the studs are fully threaded for the best strength and have a hex hole for easy installation and removal, simple locking nuts and of coarse stainless.
