I received the below email, the basics of it are not to purchase gas from EXXON or Mobile from now till the end of the year. That way if no one is buying gas from these two companies they will be forced to lower their prices to get buyers back.
It's worth a shot.

Original Email Follows:

Dear friends & family,

I hear we are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by the summer. Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the don't buy gas on a certain day campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.
Please read it and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $1.77 for regular unleaded gas in Riverwoods, IL. We all know that we're being screwed by the oil companies. Does everyone remember how they drove up the prices way past a dollar and got the gas prices to where they wanted them, claiming there was a shortage of oil. Well, there isn't any shortage now, and the oil is more
abundant than it was 35 years ago when the price of a gallon of gas was 29 cents!!!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50- $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace....not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How?
Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out on me at
this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to at least thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) .. and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the
sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes
one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am .. so trust me on this one.)

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you I didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.
PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 OR LESS RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK!!!!!!!

PLEASE take a few minutes and pass this on to everyone you know!! If you can't e-mail it to at least ten people, please print out a bunch of copies and hand it out to your family and friends!!

NO MORE MOBIL & EXXON FOR ME!!!!

Unfortunately the argument made above about the current price of gasoline is completely incorrect. There is no adjustment for inflation, so comparing prices today to prices of "yesterday" doesn't work.

For example the current gas prices have not even reached their historical highpoint after adjusting for inflation. In order for gas prices to break thier inflation adjusted record (set in 1981), gas prices today would need to be in the $ 2.90 range.

Furthermore, after adjusting for inflation, gas prices throughout the 1990s actually dropped. Consumers have been paying, on average, as a percentage of their disposable income, Less over the last decade than any time in history.

Another thing...the rise in prices has little to do with the supply side of the equation right now. The real driver of price today is demand. If you want to blame something for higher prices, blame China's red hot economic explosion which is quickly growing to be one of the world's largest energy users.

One other smaller point is that gas prices today in the USA are significantly cheaper than anywhere else in the world.

I'm not saying I like the higher prices. No doubt they suck. BUT, you have to keep these things in perspective.

Little leery of starting/enabling chain letters or pyramid schemes. I don't buy gas from these companies anyway; usually get mine from Costco, or Shell if I'm feeling rich enough.

Let's face it folks...we're in for a lot of abuse by Big Oil. Hope this proves, finally and conclusively, that the Prez isn't nearly the "Big Oil" type that everybody accuses him of being...if he really was, gas would be back at .25/gallon.

No sense in reposting your whole synopsis, Mike. Others can (should) read that from you anyway.

I could not have said it better, thank you for saying it first.

Bravo...Nice job.

i hope everyone is paying attention to this man. he obviously knows what he's talking about. gas at $2.50 per gallon today is cheap. as cheap as last year? no. but adjusted for inflation and as a percentage of your income, it's cheap. a friend of mine is a retired exxon engineer. the stories he tells are fascinating. those tankers are bought and sold 10 times by the time they reach our shores. and, by the way, costco and sam's buy from depots owned by exxon.

Now if only my salary would get adjusted for inflation too I could keep up with the gas prices.

No more gasout talk on mm.net... It all boils back down to spam. Gas outs simply don't work. Never have, never will. Besides, as predicted, Saudi's are massively increasing production to make help bush ensure the economy is looking peachy just prior to the election...
