I was tired off flogging my 3.sl0w V6 Ranger.....so I installed a 5.0 DOHC!

Mid engine of course for proper weight distribution.
Just gotta get good engine mounts that are not made of wood....and those red straps are only rated for @ 300 HP.

Going to mount the KOOKS Headers 'upside down' like a drag boat!!

:hmmm:

Should stay pretty well planted with the engine directly over the rear wheels!

Once I get a PTO/chain drive mounted directly to the driveshaft it will move like a scalded cat!

I got tired of all the '13.1' and '26.2' fitness geek stickers on every Toyota and Honda on the road.

Saw this sticker at a Beer Festival and knew that I had to put it on my truck!

Uh oh.....Lloyd's got loose lips!....LOL

Lloyd gave me the bad news....:depress:
When he disassembled the engine and went to pull the pistons out....the sleeves fell out of the block!.....:shake:
Block is split between the cylinders 1 & 2.....
$7,500 worth of junk aluminum!
Already sold the Cobra forged crank for $500.
May have a buyer for the Manley rods.
Looking to sell the main girdle.
3.700 Overbore pistons are most likely expensive momentos of wasted money on a N/A 5.0 Mod motor.
Luckily, I kept my OEM shortblock and hauled it out of the basement last night then dropped it off at Lloyd's machine shop this morning.
Will have the fancy heads & cams, plus the billet oil pump put back on the OEM shortblock to get a good running 4.6L motor....then I'll put the Marauder up "For Sale".

Looking forward to the delivery of my new 2017 Ford Fusion Sport - 325HP/380Ft-Lb (Black of course!) and putting a 5.0 Coyote* crate motor in the '85 Mustang GT!

* At least FORD got their $h*t together on the Coyote Mod motors!

Forget that Coyote stuff, too complicated. Get this one, it will drop right in. Rear sump also avail. Pump gas and a warranty. Bing bang boom done!

Actually, I looked at that engine and a 427W stroker that makes 600+ HP... but both are $10,000+ .....
I can get a 450 HP Coyote, a Tremec Magnum 6 speed, a blow shield, and a Coyote swap parts kit for under $10,000.
The Coyote will idle smooth as silk, rev to 7,000 RPM and knock down 20+ mpg.
Plus, I already have a thumping pushrod FE motor!...:D

Yes....no doubt!

The 8,250 RPM howl from under the hood of a Fox-body Mustang would be SWEET!

Yeah that was bad, Joe. Just not alot of meat there for a big bore.

Hi Chris,
Did you see that mess of a $7K aluminum coffee table-to-be?
I'm done with mod motors...unless it's a Coyote 5.0!

Yeah I saw it. Mod motors are good. Just don't make them 3.70 bores ;). Get a good rotating assy and throw boost at em.

Joe Walsh
03-31-2017, 11:27 AM
Yep.... I learned my lesson the hard way....
Would've been nice if Modular Performance had not talked me into a big bore set-up.
There's a reason FORD has to 'plasma spray' the bores on the 5.8 modular instead of sleeving it!

I'd love to know where. Probably not manufacturer's suggested retail. [emoji12]

Sweet!

I see that you too are partial to the 'wood block and red strap' mounting method!

Full disclosure, mine was only a bone-stock 175 hp "H.O." for an '84 Mustang.

It's my brother's 165,000 mile convertible and the original engine was down to about 80 pounds of compression. He turned 50 a few years ago, so I got him a replacement 5.0 and then delivered it 600 miles and with the help of my nephew/co-driver we installed it in his driveway. 1200 mile round trip in 58 hours with an engine swap in the middle!

Lots of "utility" in this big leather and chrome SUV.

Lloyd just called me with more bad news....:shake:

I took my OEM short block over to the machine shop after I learned that my 5.0L big bore was now a split bore block.
I knew that I had lost oil pressure while drag racing the OEM 4.6L engine wayyy back in 2004.....but I never really took it apart to figure out WTF was going on.
I had already ordered the forged big bore 5.0L and didn't really care about the OEM short block. I just stored it in the basement.
Turns out that I had spun 7 out of 8 bearings! That'll kill your oil pressure....and your engine!!
Haven't stopped over to see the carnage yet....but Lloyd said that he could get new bearings and recondition the OEM crank & rods.
Everytime I deal with this car I curse the crappy 4.6L Modular that FORD put into our Marauders!
They only run with a blower, a forged rotating assembly, and a LOT of boost.
If only the 5.0L Coyote was around when they designed our Marauders.....:depress:

Update:
Rebuilt 4.6 engine is supposed to be ready this week.
Will take pictures of all the wasted/ruined parts as a momento to $8,000 spent on modding a Mod motor!
Will get the DOHC Ranger back under full power!....lol

Anyone need a set of Manley Cobra connecting rods?

Joe Walsh

Picked up the rebuilt OEM 4.6 engine today.

http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae326/JoeJWalsh/IMG_7662_zps3mgmga6v.jpg (http://s984.photobucket.com/user/JoeJWalsh/media/IMG_7662_zps3mgmga6v.jpg.html)

Also got a good look at the 'big bore' split block.
My brother is going to turn it into a $7,000 dollar coffee table with a glass top.

http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae326/JoeJWalsh/IMG_7659_zpsz3x28poy.jpg (http://s984.photobucket.com/user/JoeJWalsh/media/IMG_7659_zpsz3x28poy.jpg.html)

Cylinder sleeves are NOT supposed to be removable by hand!!

http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae326/JoeJWalsh/IMG_7656_zpscob2wcbq.jpg (http://s984.photobucket.com/user/JoeJWalsh/media/IMG_7656_zpscob2wcbq.jpg.html)

I swear it looks like they bored the cylinders offcenter as the gap between cylinders # 1 & #2 is thinner than the other cylinders....

http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae326/JoeJWalsh/IMG_7657_zpsyxqoinyq.jpg (http://s984.photobucket.com/user/JoeJWalsh/media/IMG_7657_zpsyxqoinyq.jpg.html)

http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae326/JoeJWalsh/IMG_7658_zpsxdxmcivl.jpg (http://s984.photobucket.com/user/JoeJWalsh/media/IMG_7658_zpsxdxmcivl.jpg.html)

You can see where the 'fire' burned through between the adjacent cylinders at the top of the bores.
That explains why Cylinders 1# and #2 both had low compression.
Luckily, the heads didn't suffer much and only took a very small amount of surfacing to make them true.

Based on the way the cylinders look, Lloyd, the machinist, is almost certain that the block split as they sleeved it....or shortly after I fired it up.

Now that my 3.sl0w Ranger has 297,000 miles and is no longer a mid-engine 5.0 DOHC :D
I'm continuously reminded of what an absolute DOG this truck is.
It is gutless... with NO torque and it can't rev!....
It's so weak that when I turn off the A/C compressor, it feels like a 50 shot of nitrous hit.
All this and 19 - 20 MPG.....MAX!

But.... I'm determined to get it over 300K, as this will be the first and only vehicle that I put up with for so long.

I can no longer order a 2018 F150 2.7L EcoBoost, so I'll wait a few more months and get a 2019 F150.

More than double the HP
More than double the torque
More than double the tranny gears
Plus at least 5 more MPG
all while moving an extra 1,000 lbs of full size truck
... a whole LOT faster.

Anybody got the skinny on new updates/changes to the 2019 F150?
