View Full Version : Lady Gaga at the Superbowl?

Mr. Man
02-02-2017, 12:56 PM
I haven't followed football to closely since SCCheesehead passed away. I used to like to razz him and trash talk with all the other football fans out there(:banana:GO GIANTS!).

I just heard last night that Lady Gaga is the halftime act. Why? :dunno: I'm not interested in her politics or her music for that matter and lets not get into that here. What I'd like to know is what happened to football fans that they would want to see this act at halftime. In my day it was ZZTop or Aerosmith. I can't imagine the teenie boppers have the moola to afford Superbowl tickets. Don't middle aged, beer drinkin, ball scratchin, wife teasin' men follow football anymore?

IB4 the lockNo reason for a lock if the peeps keep the possibility of her potential politics out of the thread. I don't care what her views are.
Just want to know if I'm alone in wondering why the NFL picked her for the Superbowl show. I would think her demographic would be the teenie bopper set not the peeps wealthy enough to afford a Superbowl ticket.

Being a youngin' what are your thoughts Chayton?

I think your on to it Baub. The Dir. of Entertainment for the NFL is a woman and she says 40 to 45% of TV viewers are women. She maybe placating to that audience.
Bet if we could watch the Neilsens we would see a drop in men over 30 watching and an increase in teenage girls watching the halftime show.

As was said earlier in the thread, she's actually wildly talented. Not at all my cup of tea (seriously, not a fan), but can't deny the talent.

Whenever they book dumbass pop acts (Black Eyed Peas, Janet Jackson, etc.) I am convinced it's done to bring in more than just the average football fans. For example, a lot of the ladies I work with will be watching the Super Bowl just for the halftime show.

Me...I won't be watching any of it.
Only a few weeks left until the Daytona 500. :D

Eh... This isn't about Nu talent

Super Bowl is, and always will be, about $$$

So doesn't matter who is performing just as long as it's a big enough draw to get ppl to watch

And further to this football matter: REDSKINS! HAIL!

Sometimes I hear it first on XRT but they too keep me young

Twenty One Pilots
Catfish and the Bottlemen
Greenday
Whitney
Gotye
Kings of Leon
Lorde
Sia

the list goes on

And as someone mentioned its marketing. Last year NASCAR brought in Taylor Swift to sing at an event, it was their most attended event in years, I can't remember how long but she was the reason. Its all about trying to generate interest an new younger viewers to replace the old.

I am a car guy through and through, I have very little interest in NASCAR. I've been to a few races and appreciated it but will not go out of way to see one - or purchase a ticket (have only gone when given a ticket)

Sing, can't sing isn't really the point. If she were singing at a sissy sporting event like basketball I'd say no problem. Football is Metallica, ZZTop you know a testosterone driven sport. Football used to be a get down in the mud, dirty, bloody, ruff and tumble step on guys fingers ala Conrad Dobler, fight with...well everybody Lyle Alzado, pound Earl Campbell up the middle 40x a game, Reggie White kill the QB, play with Jack Ham broken fingers sport. A game Art Donovan could be proud of, then came the advent of AstroTurf and the sissifing of the rules. You can't touch the kicker, no touching the QB after he throws the ball, boo hoo we don't want our overpaid sissy players to get hurt. It's been a slow slide downhill ever since. Next thing you know teams will be disbanding their scantily clad cheerleaders.
After typing that all out now I understand the choice of Lady Gaga. Football has become a sissy sport.:depress:

Since when did basketball become a "sissy" sport:confused: clearly you never played that game , and while football isn't as physical as it once was history has showed us what concussions , and being beat to hell to do to long term health , just take a look at some of the old school players who can't remember the day before , or walk straight without falling , the game has changed for the better.

With zz top mentioned a couple of times, they are actually playing at Super Bowl Live tonight in Houston.

What football fan actually watches the half time show? The show is to cater to a wider audience and draw people in who wouldn't normally watch a football game.

I respectfully disagree. The game has gotten soft. Professional players take risk that's why they are paid the big bucks. Lowest paid player made 435K(2015) and you can bet they were 3rd stringers. Now if you are talking college or high school football then maybe some extra rules need to be in play.

http://moneynation.com/how-much-money-do-nfl-players-make/

I used sissy when comparing the 'big 4'. Football and hockey seem the least sissy, so that leaves baseball and basketball. Baseball seems to require some sort of strategy and the players are always scratching themselves and spitting chew. Basketball is guys running one way then the other and shooting the ball. While I can appreciate their physical fitness it seems to me to be the least manly man of the 4. JMO You may disagree and that's fine. If we all agreed on everything the World would be a boring place.

I played basketball in my youth, though not well. I find it boring to play and even more boring to watch. Went to some games in college and usually left after a short stint. Just couldn't get into it.

I'm sure Charles Barkley or Shaq would love to have a conversation with you about basketball being a "sissy sport". Also, Lady Gaga has a pretty good singing voice. Maybe you would like it better if she performed with someone more your age like Tony Bennett. Oop's, she already does that.

I guess it becomes a man's sport when you get life threatening injuries that kill you or make you wanna to abuse women or commit suicide. Don't kid yourself, football has gotten soft too.

Basketball has always been a sissy sport touch another player and its a foul.
Basketball changed because people want to see "Highlight Reel" performances. It was great to see my hometown "Pistons" whip butt and win championships. The Pistons had a lot to do with how the game changed. It during this time when they were beating up on the "Bulls" and Michael Jordon. This is when the "Jordon Rules" came to be. Back then if you drove line you may have gotten away with it the first time. The second time you getting knocked on your butt. "Bad Boys Ruled"!!!!!!!!!!
All sports have changed. You don't see fighting on the ice in hockey like you used to. Baseball has a pitcher to start, a middle pitcher and a closer. Oh, and they get to pitch every 5th day. I remember Denny Mclain pitching 3 times in the 67' World Series. Back then pitchers would pitch when needed. There was only a four man rotation not five. I guess you say cars have gotten soft because they don't have the metal dashboards and drum brakes they used to have. Believe me everything has gotten soft.

Hell, she sings with Tony Bennett! Thier remake of Christmas songs is awesome, "I really can't stay... Baby it's cold outside..."

I agree ... It was a terrific show. Don't think I recognized any of the songs; but the show itself was a real technology spectacle. She has guts descending from the roof of the Stadium on cables. How did they get 300 drones to fly in formation to make the American Flag with lights ?? She did 3 costume changes on stage and I couldn't figure out how or when it happened.
