Just looking for a better growl than stock. Mufflers and cats probably. Looking at some flowmaster 44s suggested in other threads. What cats are good, (no trouble codes or other problems.) Thanks, appreciate it all.-Mike

go to youtube and look for marauder exhaust vids..exhaust is a preference.alot of vids will show full exhaust with headers so not a true sound for stock manifolds, piping. Flowmasters 44 can be raspy, crackle pop sounding for some and others like it. Unless your cats are bad, no need to change..can remove the 2nd set and place a straight pipe and it will make it louder..no codes will pop up..hard part is finding a shop to do it as removing a cat is technically illegal..

I have the complete Stainless Works, long tube, system on my '04.
The sound doesn't drown out the stereo.
The hum doesn't weigh on your nerves on long drives.
It easily passes state pollution tests.
And the performance is excellent.

^+1^

I've found they're more prone to do it if you talk in person then over the phone.

IMHO, look into the Flowmaster Delta 50's. They pretty much resemble the factory sound, just amplify it. I had them with the rear cat delete at one time and loved it!

Confirming the advice given above! Just swapped the oem mufflers in my 03 MM for a pair of wicked flow mufflers. Tried first with the rear cats still in , and it was only slightly louder than stock. Not good enough! Removing the rear cats was the ticket! When the car is at idle, you'd think it's stock.Step on the throttle and drool! Deep, low rumble that's heard, but not overwhelming. They are similar to magnaflows. Resonators intact. No CELs.

I've had in order

1) Deleted resonators
(Same as before IMO)

2) Flowmaster delta 50, del. res. (Not much better)

3) Flowmaster delta 50, del res, delelted rear cats
(Getting somewhere)

4) Customized MAC LT's, homemade X pipe, delta 50's, res del, rear cat del.
(God awful raspy)

5) same as 4 but changed muffs to Magnaflows (this was my favorite sound)

6) S.W.s LT's, and complete catted S.W. system to rear but swapped their ugly tips for some 4" Megs. (Best looking but don't care for slip joints, fitment sucked, and it only sounds good at idle or WOT.)

I have plenty of videos throughout different stages on YouTube under Marauding4life.

Which set - off road or hi-flow cat?

I got Kooks headers. Kooks X-Pipe with highflow cats. Borla pro-x mufflers. And custom made 2 1/2 tail pipes. With the factory tips. And it sounds great when you get on it. But super quiet once you let off the throttle. If you have the funds. You will not be mad. At yourself once you invest on a full headers to tail pipe kit with muffler. As for the way I did it. It was a little bit of money. For no one makes a catback for our cars. But only Stainless Steels makes a header too tail pipe kit for the Mercury Marauder. But like $2k plus for there kit. Plus installation. Also either way you go. You need to get a SCT tuner. With a tune. And Marty'o Moe's Shop. Can make it happen. And you will not be disappointed. Good Luck on what you do to your car. For this is a addiction. Once you do one thing. Your are going to want more.

What re the best aftermarket hi-flow cats? Articles I have been reading favor

1. Flowmaster 2230125 223 Series 2.5″ Inlet/Outlet Universal Catalytic Converter

and

2. MagnaFlow 94006 Universal Catalytic Converter

Yes, I know they are not legal in CA; not much is. Silly state.
