View Full Version : Tire rotation at Ford

Just took my 03 A out of winter storage, brought it to the local Ford dealership for full service. I picked the car up, and was running late to an appointment about 80 miles away.

While on the highway, I could tell there was something weird with the car. At first, I thought the driver seat settings were changed. Then the ABS and brake dummies came on. I pulled over at a rest area, and it took me a minute to realize they (Ford) had "rotated" the tires.

I was embarrassingly running 245/55R18 on the front, and 235/50/R18 on the rear for about 30 miles.

Anything I should be on the lookout for damage wise?

What should I ask from Ford tomorrow morning?

I'm not looking for any confrontation or grudges with these folks, but to be honest, I'm quite furious about it still. How???

I love my Marauder very much, and I take it to Ford techs SPECIFICALLY to avoid this kind of stuff.

Thanks for listening, gentlemen. My GF is not about to hear any more on this topic.

The tire-rotation tech at any dealer is likely not the most qualified tech there. Since very few cars have staggered sizes, I doubt it even occurred to them to check, unless you mentioned it specifically. I am confident they have never seen a Marauder before, much less know anything about it. To them it was just another black Grand Marquis or even a Crown Vic.

No, you didn't damage anything...just take it back and ask them to correct their error.

and give you a free oil change or something..numbskulls..morons etc..Technician, what a crock of names..I'ld be hot just for the stupidity for the prices dealership charges in general anyway..They try an upsell everything under the sun, brake service check..Ask them if they can rotate the air in the tires....

When I used to go to the dealer I would mention it to the write-up guy, even directly told him to tell the tech. I would still get it back wrong more often than not.

How many miles did they put on the car?

When I first bought my car I noticed it was pulling very badly to the right hand side. The seller kept playing it off saying it was in need of an alignment but it was worse the that. I ened up pulling over to take a look only to find he unknowingly had the 235's on the passenger side and the larger 245's on the drivers side.

Of course I didn't mention what I noticed with the tires to the guy selling and used the steering/pulling issiue as a negotiating point to bring the price down. Once the car was at home I rearranged the tires to the proper setup and it drove mint with no problem in the long run.

No Marauders came with same size tires all around. All were staggered.

I brought baby back to the dealership. They were also embarrassed, but very apologetic.

Free oil change, detail, and a NASCAR poster from 1993 signed by Geoff Bodine. Back on track.

I took mine to Collins Ford(the biggest in the are, oooo, ahhhh...please...) and specially told them NOT to rotate because of well the obvious...I didn't get out of the parking lot before I turned around and gave them a piece of my mind and made them do right meow ahead of whoever was next...pitiful...

Thanks for listening, gentlemen. My GF is not about to hear any more on this topic.I could see this happening, our tires look similar in size front to rear at a quick glance. I would mention it to them and tell them you are owed a free oil change. This is a simple mistake that's not worth getting mad about.

Holy Crap! This same incident happened to me at Tire Barn, although the manager caught it.
Every time that I see the the young lady, I remind her about it . She's so embarrassed.

So you'd let the dealership change your oil when they can't rotate the tires properly?!?!? :shake::eek::shake::eek:

BTW.... Radial tires should be rotated front-to-back for same size directional tires and side-to-side for differently sized non-directional tires.

Begs asking...

Are these folks rotating tires without asking first?

I've had this issue happen quite frequently even after telling the person at the counter about the side to side rotation only due to different tire sizes. But they always get it wrong. First time I remember was at Midas. Then at a stealership. Then at Big O Tires, etc. etc. etc. And sometimes they try to argue it was an aftermarket thing that I must have done, etc. but I have to explain it was stock.

Next time anyone has this issue, open the drivers door and the original sticker shows that the marauder has staggered sized tires :)

I bought a 04 that had 235s all the way around.... was able to get a better price on the car because the previous owner said something was wrong with the ABS

REMOVED the walmart tires the very next day

you can switch directonal tires side to side by dismounting them and taking the driver side inside sidewall and making it the pass. side outer sidewall, etc. not that gains you anything. no,i do not follow this practice.

I put in 40#'s F&R and drive. Honestly I check my tire pressure maybe twice a year maybe or heading out of town, always the same.

As for rotating. Nope.

Now my truck.. Air up four half flat tires every damn week thanks to corroded aftermarket rims that nobody wants to spend the four minutes it takes to run a wire wheel drill on.. And I rotate the expensive 20" Nittos every year. (Which is less than 4,000 miles)

I run a shop and I want you to understand that the person working on your car does not pay attention. It required a competent service manager to watch over each car and make sure what happened to you does not happen. Oops, sorry, I was busy for 6 minutes while some tech rotated your tires on your Marauder and didnt pay attention to the markings on your tires that indicate a staggered fitment. Ugh, the struggle is real, but in all fairness, it is not common for vehicles to have staggered fitment. Be proactive in the future and mention that the car is not your normal vehicle. Good luck.

Agree .... After 14 years, I still have the service manager write "Do Not Rotate" in large Sharpie across the front of the ticket. Sometimes I have him add "35 psi Front and 38 psi Rear" to the ticket. The tire rotation problem only happened once to me when the car was still new ... Not since. However, before I get into the car I check the sizes. I also check the oil level. Trust; but Verify !!

For every car I have ever taken anywhere for ANY work I always, always, ALWAYS check everything over BEFORE I LEAVE THE PARKING LOT.

My dealership knew that they could not rotate the tires as their software flagged the Marauder as having staggered tire sizes.

The dealer also assigns certain mechanics to work on these special cars...he chooses staff who know about muscle cars and modified show cars.

I forgot to mention to always check the torque on the lug nuts 95 FT Pounds , (depending on the Vehicle Mfg's Specs) as some shops may forget to tighten them( because they were interrupted for one reason or another) under or over torque them. My oldest brother had a close friend killed because of an employee not tightening the lugs nuts and therefore, the wheel came off which resulted in a fatality. You also, should check air pressures, as some tires I discovered were over - under inflated sometime by ten to twenty psi.

Lug nut torque should always be checked at the first 100 miles after the initial tightening.

Ford forgot to torque one of mine back around '05. I remember being upset expecting it not to match the rest but apparently they weren't sparkling perfect even new so it matched.
