Many here only remember today being called "Memorial Day" during their lifetime; but the original "Decoration Day" name dates back to the end of the Civil War. It is a day set aside for remembering the men and women who died while serving in the country's armed services. Remembrance took the form of visiting the graves of the fallen and decorating them with flags, flowers, or wreaths.

In the words of President George W. Bush .... "On Memorial Day, America’s thoughts go to the courageous men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives for the country they love. They defended our Nation, liberated the oppressed, and served the cause of liberty. Every moment we live in freedom was secured by their sacrifice, and every American is in their debt. We can never repay what they gave for this country, but on this holiday, we acknowledge that debt by showing our respect and gratitude."

The day was still widely known as Decoration Day up until the end of World War II. As a kid, I still remember that name being used frequently until about the mid to late 1950s as the new term "Memorial Day" came more into common use. The name was not changed officially by Federal Law to Memorial Day until 1967.

The traditional date is 30 May of each year. However, it is now observed as the last Monday of May so we all can benefit from a 3-day weekend and the "official" start of summer.

Please take a moment today to remember those who have fallen in service to the country. Flags are to be flown at Half Mast until Noon today and then are raised fully for the remainder of the day. :flag:
