Motorcraft FL-820S. Has some kind of anti-drain back valve in there so unfiltered oil doesn't get mixed in with the filtered...Or something like that, sure someone will chime in with the correct spec.

I always use K&N on mine because my Trans dapt filter relocation allows a huge filter. I learned to always use a name-brand filter from personal experience. I used fleet filters on my Taurus and got a light tap on startup. The Motorcraft filter stopped it. On aluminum motors always use a premium filter. This is not the place to save $3.

Motorcraft FL-820S. Has some kind of anti-drain back valve in there so unfiltered oil doesn't get mixed in with the filtered...Or something like that,The ADBV is to prevent the oil in the engine (and the filter) from draining back down into the oil pan, then having to be re-pumped back up with every start. Most filters have an ADBV, not just the Motorcraft. Premium filters (like the MC) will have one made of silicone rubber (as opposed to nitrile). Silicone remains flexible at low temps and doesn't degrade at higher temps. MC filters also have the bypass valve in the Ford-recommended position in the base (threaded) end. Others have it in the dome end, which can allow oil to wash across the "dirty" side of the media during a bypass event.

IMHO, the FL820S is the best value-for-money in that it is inexpensive and easily obtainable. Other premium filters include WIX, NAPA Gold, AMSOIL, and the FRAM Ultra.

K&N filters used to be decent (although the only thing "premium" about them was the price) when they were made in America by Champion Laboratories. K&N pulled the contract a few years ago and they are now made in Korea and Mexico, and the quality has declined...but not the price.

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but has anyone used the Ford Racing FL-820 Oil Filter? Seems like overkill at around $20.00 each, but I am curious what anyone's experience may be or if it simply doesn't work with our MMs.

My brother buys those FORD Racing Oil Filters....and swears by them.
I thought that he was crazy to pay that kind of $$$ for an Oil Filter.
But, then again, he's got a BOSS 302 and spins 7,500 rpm with 5W-50 weight oil.

The Ford Racing version of the FL820S will work fine on any modular motor. The basic difference between it and the "normal" FL820S is a higher burst-strength can and a slightly higher media efficiency: 99% vs. 94% at 20u. Does it buy you anything on a street motor? As Spock famously said: "A difference which makes no difference IS no difference."
