On today’s episode of “name that rattle!” We have a 2003 Mercury Marauder. The owner is experiencing a rattling sound at idle, coming from directly under the car. The owner believes it sounds like the drivers side primary cat on its way out, but he wants to hear from the experts!!! Feel free to chime in!

Note that in the video, when the sound goes away is when I give it baby gas. Let off and it rattles.

Hard to hear from under the hood, its definitely coming from the bottom. I was thinking CAT or maybe the $300 torque converter I have in there? Will do more investigating once I get home.

Didn't someone have a cracked flex plate making a similar noise?

Check the Torque converter bolts to the flywheel.

Yes, sounds like two pieces hitting each other... heat shield or mount pieces clanking agaist each other.
When I've heard inside cat baffles come loose I've heard more like BB's a looser higher sound... although I guess it could be one bigger piece comming loose and clanging against inside.

UPDATE: I gave the cat one good smack with a BFH. Noise gone for now :)

I lied. Noise seems worse now. ****. praying this isnt rod knock... if it was, wouldnt it get louder with revs? even the tiniest bit of throttle and it goes away. Didnt have a chance to tighten the torque converter bolts since I need a helper. Praying its not the dreaded rod knock... ugh :(

Sounds similar to the cat converter problem that was present on a lot of 04 Crown Vics. I had one replaced on the 8 year, 80,000 mile warranty, way back when.

I think its flexplate... Been dealing with some crap so havent had the motivation to get under there. Hopefully this week..... :/

If you put it in drive and the noise stops, it is the flexplate. Looks like somebody bastardized a cat install also. Butchers.
