View Full Version : Dead fuel pump...?

OK....
So I pulled the split block 5.0 DOHC last Spring.
Had my OEM short block rebuilt and got everything back in the Marauder.
Now, when I 'Key ON' or crank....there is no fuel pressure.
- Cannot hear the fuel pump run to build pressure.
- Checked Fuel pump relay and fuse....Both good.
- Trunk mounted inertia switch is not tripped.
Can a fuel pump just die from sitting for a year+?? (Marauder was stored indoors/heated garage)
Any other things I should check?....:hmmm:
When I get it running again....who wants to buy a super clean 18,000 mile Marauder??
(Fusion Sport is quicker, smoother and knocks down 25+ MPG all day long.)

It's possible but not likely that the pump quit. Something electrical is my guess. Not much help but just hang in there.

This is possible. My sons will buy cars they find sitting in back yards, and fields, that have been sitting anywhere from 6 months to several years. One of the first things they check is the fuel pump. More often then you think the pump will be bad. Make sure you have power to the pump. If you do and it's not on, then it's time for a pump.

Don't forget the FPDM.

And the answer is.....
Fuel pump was 'stuck'!
- Disconnected the fuel pump wiring harness right above the rear axle.
- Applied 12VDC directly to pump from a spare car battery.
- Pump would make a very slight click then nothing.
- Reversed the 12VDC leads to try and spin the pump backwards....
- Fuel pump runs!
- Put the leads back to the pump correctly....
- Fuel pump runs!
- Reconnect fuel pump wiring harness and turn ignition key on...
- Fuel pump runs and pumps gas like it should.
Saved myself a lot of swearing and cut knuckles trying to get the fuel pump hat out of the tank.
Now I've got to siphon the stale gas out of the tank and put some fresh 93 octane in.
Maybe she'll fire up for the first time in 2+ years!

How much gas was in the tank? Had a similar issue with the SB a few years ago. I had about a 1/4 of a tank and the car sat for a few months. When I tried to start it, nothing and it had worked just fine when it was parked. Bought a fuel pump, but on a lark I poured 5 gallons of 93 into the tank. Car started right up. I bring the pump with me on long trips just in case, but it's been a few years with no issues. Long of the short, if you are storing the car for more than a week or two fill the gas tank.

Yep....was about 1/4 -> 1/3 tank of gas.
Only problem was getting it to a gas station once the engine expired....:depress:

Disconnect Fuel Filter and run a hose from tank connection to a container.....turn ignition on and let the lazy Fuel Pump work for ya Joe!!;)

Great minds think alike!
I tried that but the fuel pump will only run for @ 5 seconds before it shuts off. Then you have to 'key Off - key On' cycle it each time.

FPDM must think the fuel line is broken and shuts it down....wonder if you can bypass it somehow??
How's the old gas smell......bad or OK??

Same exact scenario here. We pulled the pump, and the sock was deteriorated. The pump was bad. Siphoned the turpentine smelling gas, put in new gas, and fired right off. That was two weeks ago. Running great now. We always put in fuel stabilizer, but it is not good forever. My original 96 Impala SS was filled with Amoco premium in 97 when I parked it. Amoco's premium used to be known by nickname of "white gas". Fuel still smells new and runs great. All the additives today have hurt some of the fuels.

Actually the 'old' gas didn't smell bad...nor like paint varnish.
Got about 6+ gallons out of the tank and poured it into my 3.sl0w Ranger.
That cast iron boat anchor-of-an-engine will burn anything!
Got 7 gallons of fresh 93 octane and I'll disconnect the fuel feed at the intake manifold....
then purge any leftover/old gas, reconnect the fuel line fitting and fire her up this weekend.

I didn't have a way of pulling the line off so I just unscrewed the shrader valve and used a hose and a hose clamp. Good luck I hope it goes smooth. :2thumbs:

" IT's ALIVE!!! "
Today, I fired up the Marauder with my freshly rebuilt OEM 4.6L short block.
Warmed her up, broke her in and everything was working properly.
She's still got the ported heads, extrude honed intake and Crower cams, plus the headers/exhaust..... and she runs like a scalded cat!
I haven't driven the car in 3 years....but Ohhhh what a joy!
Sounds awesome....haven't heard a V8 howl like that in wayyy too long.
:hmmm:
Maybe I won't sell her after all.

Damn Joe, it’s been three years now??
I can’t believe how fast time slips by anymore. It’s been 14 months since my blower ate its own impeller!

I hope you decide to keep it, you’ve been here forever!

I have a similar experience. Pulled engine several months ago. Went to replace fuel pump, but tank was full. Put a bucket in engine compartment, where the line to fuel rail was disconnected, added battery...and nothing. Switched terminals & got a click. Went back and pump ran enough to empty the tank. Only problem was the pump made some horrible noises from time to time. Clearly, needed the replacement. My fear is that the intermittent pump made the car run lean and trashed the engine. Oh well, its only money. :bigcry:

How much are you asking for the car Joe?

I'm not sure...KBB doesn't reflect how rare/collectible the Marauder is.
They are saying that it is a $12,000 car.
No rust, no dirt...nothing but a clean garage kept car.
Where are you going to buy a 'still smells like new' Marauder for 12K...?
For that price....I'll keep it!

Yard art!
Seriously, I would rather dig four holes for the tires out front and make a permanent display than to give it away!

Joe, I am in the same boat, car has sat for 2 yrs plus with just under 3/4 tank of 93 octane (added Sea foam when I pulled the motor) fresh motor started right up but lost fuel pressure after about 10 sec., tried to siphon tank with no luck seamed like I was hitting some thing (baffle?) in the tank???? any advice on getting the fuel out of the tank, what fuel I did get out of the lines & filter did not smell or seem bad. I am planning to try and un-stick my pump??? like you described, this coming weekend, I hope this works.

Yes....it is a PITA to get a siphon hose through the curved fill neck and past the 'obstruction' in the tank.
I did get a siphon hose into the tank after a lot of trial and error, then siphoned out about 7 gallons of old gas.
It did not smell bad/ old/ nor like varnish. The old 93 octane gas ran fine in my 3.sl0w Ranger.....:D

I believe it’s an anti-roll device for spillage.
