Hi,

I need to replace my power steering pump because it's making weird noises like possessed birds and it's louder than it should be. It has been flushed and has new steering fluid.

I'm looking at RockAuto and according to all their listings the Marauder steering pump is the same as the crown vic and marquis pump, it says it the same for 2003 to 2008 crown and marquis, 2003 to 2007 town car and 2003-2004 marauder.
Is this accurate?
I had a guy on FB asking me if i had already replaced mine because he attempted to replce his in his marauder and the pump he bought does not fit right, he went online and checked and they are listing the very same pump for crown vic and Marauder.

Has anyone replaced the pump? Anything I should know before buying or replacing?

Thank you :bows:

+1. I’ve been trying to describe the sound myself, and “possessed birds” is perfect!

Mine is just starting to make noise, only at certain times when it’s fairly hot out and I’ve been doing a lot of driving. Haven’t tried flushing the system yet.

Did you try the Lucas power steering fluid. I'd tends to work great on leaks and noise making power steering pump. It is Werth the try. They sell it everywhere. Advanced auto Pep-Boys AutoZone. Try it out you would be surprised.

I haven't thought about it but I think I'll rather just replace the pump. 114k miles on this pump I think it need to be replaced. Still that was a good recommendation thanks,

Check the Tasca catalog and see if they are the same or different.

Dan, what fluid did you use when you had it flushed?

On Tasca the part number for Marauder and Grand marquis is

3W1Z-3A674-CARM

I just want anyone to confirm they are the same before I buy.

I used Preston brand.

I used Preston brand.Sorry, I didn't ask the question clearly...I meant did you use power steering fluid or transmission fluid?

It was proper steering fluid, not transmission fluid. The bottle said with stop leak too.

Calls for dextron with macron, I use the same fluid in my transmission as I do in the power steering...

That's what the book calls for

Dan, the power steering should have Mercon ATF, not power steering fluid. Since Ford has deprecated plain Mercon, it is now backspec'd to Mercon V.

I would try re-flushing the P/S system using the correct fluid before replacing the pump.

I tend to avoid online parts stores like RockAuto. Sometimes the difference in price is not worth the wait OR having to ship it back and wait it it fails. Not to mention the mystery source of the part. Many chain stores have lifetime warranties on their parts and are honored for life over-the-counter with a receipt. Mercon V should be used in these systems. I don't believe in additives or magic in a bottle.

Is flushing this out something you can do yourself, or does it need a flush and fill machine?

I use a turkey baster and a 1/4 tube taped to it, this gets it down deep and no mess or taking it apart. Suck it out, fill it up, start car and turn steering wheel far left and far right as far as it will go
Then repeat until fluid comes out clean

Mercon not macron whoops!

Oh boy I didn't know I was supposed to use Mercon V . I've been running the system like that for the last 5 months or so, do you guys think there was damage done?
I will replace the fluid and hopefully the noise is gone but I doubt it

I do the same as Turbov6 although some people pull the return line and re-route it into a jug then start the engine while keeping the reservoir full and running it until the fluid come out clean.

My '94 Thunderbird SuperCoupe did spec PSF, and it isn't exactly a stressful use, but Ford must have spec'd ATF in these cars for a reason.

I know Honda power steering systems need a particular fluid or they do strange stuff, but I don't know if there would be damage.

I doubt any damage, I bet it's the reason why it's making noises???

Flush it out and see :)

Thanks, appreciate it. Mine is the original stuff, so it’s way overdue.
