View Full Version : "New Lifters" Are noisy lifters an issue on these cars?
Hi Everyone,
My 1st post on MM! I am shopping for a Marauder and have come across a few in my price range but I have noted some owners have replaced lifters or say they have a clatter and need replaced. Is this a common issue on the DOHC motors? I'd pick up one of these cars but I dont want to have to go inside the engine any time soon after dropping a few grand on a car.
Can you direct me to a place on here with a FAQ on buying an MM so I don't clutter the board?
Thanks for your help before I buy

Some people confuse lifter noise to injector tick..Marauders have larger injectors than CV so they make a little noise. or if it sounds like a sewing machine, could be timing chains. also cyl.8 has a poor channel for coolant and has a dead spot and can cause cyl 8 valve to get hot and bend, it's not everycar, but it has happened enough, doing the head cooling mod is most recommended
some areas to check for or be aware of
Cross over tube (COT) is obsolete, hard to find used, make sure the one you buy isn't all rusty
03 cars, black mostly can have paint issues with clear popping off and even rusting under
03 cars may have soft rear axle shafts check for leaking rear fluid out of axle
03 heads have 4 threads in spark plugs, 04 have 9
A tune is preffered to get as it wakes the car up and changes the shifting so it does not go to OD at 30mph. etc.
Must run premium fuel
4.10 gears really wake the car up, will need tune, and gets 1-2 mpg less.

Soooo did I read that correctly, that the car your looking at is ONLY a couple of grand?
This was a timing guide, that what he said in the reply section
They are not lifters, they are called tappets

I thought they were correctly called HLAs...Hydraulic Lash Adjusters.

Technically speaking they are no longer hydraulic when they fail.

Paint issue is NOT limited to just the 03's. The worst one I've seen was an 04.
If they go bad, it’s because an oil passage got blocked. And that means it was poorly maintained.

Unfortunately spending a few grand is going to get you one that will need more than average maintenance or repairs. Spending, oh, tens of thousands can get you one that has been babied, garaged, and massaged with a diaper. If in doubt find one with a bad motor and build your own so there's NO question about the maintenance or condition of the internals. These aluminum motors are amazing but unforgiving.
