View Full Version : KY license plate law?
I have a significant collection of MI license plates. Lately I've been getting them from u-pick junk yards. The other day one of the workers said that in KY and TN it's illegal to own a plate that wasn't issued to you.
Really?
A quick check of KY SOS website indicates that when you change title you should turn in your old plate to the DMV.
That doesn't necessarily mean that it's illegal to own another plate, but...
Can anyone shed light on this?

Kirk,
I am not aware of this but when a car is sold (seller to buyer) in KY, the plate goes with the car. If a car is scrapped/junked, the plate either goes to the salvage yard that purchased it or to the DMV if thru an insurance claim.
If purchased out of state, then of course, a new plate is required.
The annual plate renewal of a car comes with a sticker that is placed on the plate each year along with paying property tax.
As far as my vanity plate on the MM,... you can get a new plate every so many years if you choose so, as they can show wear over time and/or rust needing replaced. I went this route once so I could have one on the wall, that is the exact vanity plate (obviously) that is on the car now.
Mike.

Don't worry with over 300,000 Federal Laws and each State over 150,000 Laws plus millions of Regulations that carry the wt of the Law the probable answer is yes it's illegal.

You are taking legal advice from a Kentucky u-pick junk yard employee?
You keep it in you garage or house?? Then, who cares?
Place it on your vehicle and ride around. Different story.

More a curiosity and an interest in how laws vary state to state. No big deal.
