Doing a major garage reorganization/sorting/condensing. Something I’ve been wanting to do since 2005. Came across a lot of specialty tools from years gone by. Many of which mechanics of last 20 years probably have no clue what they are. Thought I’d post a few pics to see who’s old enough to know what they are.

BINGO! You got it Roger. Wow, that was fast!


In more detail: Early 1980s, GMs very 1st computerized ignition/fuel management system called CCC (Computer Command Control). Used this "key" to short 2 terminals on the under dash connector (think OBD2 connector but smaller). Shorting the terms would activate onboard diagnostics and give a blink code on the CEL.

I do this to 1" bolts to use like a bull pin. The 2 pieces of metal I have to line up are to thick and a regular bull pin doesn't work that well.

It’s used to retain a small block Chevy (carberated) fuel pump drive rod so it doesn’t drop down and impede installation when replacing fuel pump

Nope. I let others do that for a bit and then show them the secret passage to thread the home made bolt in to that junctions the rod bore so the bolt pinches the rod (use ZERO force!) in place while pump is swapped out easy peezy. Should not take longer than 10 minutes to replace SBC fuel pump.

CORRECT! This one is Ford. Got it for my Mark V. slightly annoying but the superior design for rear disc parking brake especially over the little brake shoe design on the MM

That is a Moon shine jug corncob cork remover. Use when Billy Joe Bob gets a little to drunk and knocks the corncob too far down in the jug and he can't get his 2 remaining teeth on it to pull it out. Very rare tool, but still widely use in 4 rural Alabama counties.

Used paper clips many times when couldn't find a "key".


When GM first rolled out CCC I attended the class at AC/Delco training facility in Brookfield WI. The gave each of us a fist full of these "keys".

Dang it, im late. Have a few of those valve spring compressors myself. And yes, my compression tester is compatible with the shop air hose.

Before emissions controls blanketed the early ‘controlled’ vehicles, one could just slide open a door on the GM distributor, insert the correct hex key and set the dwell. GM switched over completely to HEI in 1975 as I recall. Prior to this, as the motors were increasingly covered up with thermal vacuum switches, vacuum lines, EGR valve, etc. it became increasingly difficult to reach the distributor.

I recall Ford having a vacuum controlled ‘decelleration control valve’ that kept the throttle from closing too fast due to emissions reasons. Sadly, it often malfunctioned.

I’m curious to see what the tool is for.

The tool has a flexible shaft to allow access to the distributor cap points access door in all the various GM 6-cyl and V8 dist locations.

I recall Ford having a vacuum controlled ‘decelleration control valve’ that kept the throttle from closing too fast due to emissions reasons. Sadly, it often malfunctioned.


Car manufacturers had to detune engines so radically to meet emission standards the engines would stall if the throttle snapped closed like normal. They introduced the DCV to bring the throttle plate in the carb to the closed position in a controlled manner to prevent the engine stalling when vehicle is coming to a stop.


They also introduced the electronic idle control solenoid. The engines were so gutless they had to increase engine idle speed to keep them running on A/T vehicles in Drive but if you shut off an engine that was running at the higher rpms when trans in Park the engine would diesel. The EICS would be set for required idle rpm in gear and the carb base idle screw was set much lower. then when ignition key was shut off the EICS would de-energize allowing throttle to close further to the base idle setting allowing engine to shut down w/o dieseling.

Yessir.
This particular application was for the parking brake on a F700. Hydraulically released spring brakes. They somehow managed to break the control valve.

MyBlackBeasts is the winner. Handy little puller for top post terminals that absolutely do not want to come off. Can be used on some styles of wiper arms too.
