--did they offer this in 2002 yes

-why does a 120K mile single cam 4.6 need "a timing chain"? Ford TSB:

FORD: 2000-2003 CROWN VICTORIA
MERCURY: 2000-2003 GRAND MARQUIS

ISSUE:
Some 4.6L 2V engines may exhibit a grinding type noise from the timing chain area. This may be caused by excessive wear of the timing chain tensioner arms. The tensioner arm has an aluminum base with a nylon surface. Another indication of this condition may be fine nylon and/or aluminum particles present in the engine oil.

ACTION:
Inspect the timing chain and arms to determine if excessive wear exists. If this condition is present, replace the timing chains, tensioners and the tensioner arms. Refer to the following Service Information for details.

SERVICE INFORMATION
Refer to Workshop Manual Section 303-01A for correct replacement service procedures.

If I lived closer, I'd be on this one, even if I don't buy his claim that it's faster than a Marauder.

wow, great deal on the 02. Buddy down the street from my parents had a 02 and with a tune, exhaust, cold air kit and a converter. We did a 60 punch on the highway, ill be damned if i didnt get a hole shot of 1.5 cars and then he stayed right there and kept up.

If that car was 350 miles or less away, it would be in my driveway the next day or same day weather permitting.

02 has the old front suspension and a narrower rear axle. So you cannot slap marauder wheels on it because the foot print is different. 02 and older is still a cool car, that car has duals and air ride too.

Any idea if its rusty?

Not a bad deal, good engine swap candidate if it is as clean as it looks.

I gave the guy a call and will be looking at it early next week. "ticking noise like a typewriter.." We'll see what she looks like.

Easily could be a clogged oil squirter for the lash adjusters. RTV gets clogged in there if anyone did a sloppy job on a oil pan or timing cover.

Looks like the foot well has been worn thru the mat and carpet.

On the other hand you get a Snickers in the back seat. :)

Sooo, I looked at this one. I'm not sure what is left on it that is worth $750, maybe the wheels, gauge cluster, column cover, and console with broken latch....

All of the wheel openings have been cut and rolled by a beaver or a monkey with an angle grinder. The lower jamb/C-pillars have been hit with a sledge hammer and the front and rear bumpers have been cut. Must have had some gigantic wheels on it at one time. Dents in every panel and the spoiler is on with self tapping sheet metal screws that are poking out the top. Console latch is broken and the cup holders are cracked. Seller seems like a nice guy and has only owned it for a year, but this car has been abused at some point in it life.

What do you all think- let someone else save it, or grab it and part the few good things left?

Probably had "wagon wheels" on it at one time, that means the front suspension could probably use attention. On the other hand, a used up P71 is probably more expensive, so could this be a winter car or DD for someone?

once a car gets run down to a certain point it seems like there's not enough new parts and money in the whole world to make it factory fresh again.

I'd pass on it if just scavenging for parts...

Sports are fairly rare, so it's a shame someone let this one get so bad, but for $725 it's certainly worth doing the tensioners and keeping as a DD.

I still think it looks good for the ask price...

Sounds like the consensus is still a driver. I'm short on space so adding a third panther is out of the question. It's worse than both of mine, so if anyone wants it, I can set it up for you, I think I still have another day for first right of refusal.
