Well, lets see! I think you'll need about 12 quarts of Mercon V!

When the time comes I plan to undo the line at the radiator, install a hose to a drain pan, crank it up and stand ready for the pan to run dry and then start pouring fresh Mercon V in until I can be relatively sure all of the old fluid is out. Starting with a hot tranny, that should be when the fluid runs noticeably cooler. Then button things back up and top off after she's hot.

I ain't crackin' that pan open until she's out of warranty and/or I have some mods to do. Even then it might be on a bench as I have built and modded hundreds of trannys when I worked for Chevoldsmopontibuick.

scare:

First, use Mercon V only...

Second, it will depend on which change method you use: the simple pan-drop, or a flush-and-fill...for the pan-drop you'll need 4-5 quarts, for the full flush, the manual calls for 18 quarts.

Changing the fluid via the pan-drop method is fine if you do it every 15k miles or so...this will also allow you to inspect the inside of the pan for excessive grey sludge (a thin coating is normal) and too many whiskers on the magnet (again, some are normal)...and to install a new filter, at least every other time (the factory pan gasket is re-usable). Installing a new pan with a drain plug (or adding a plug to the existing pan) makes things much easier and MUCH less messy, too...

When my tranny comes out Tuesday for the new T/C and J-Mod, it will be refilled with Royal Purple Synthetic.
I once read here that these filters were good for several fluid changes?

That's my understanding, too...as long as there isn't any other indication of a problem, and the fluid's been changed at regular, reasonable intervals...I installed a new filter at the first change (15k) and replaced the pan with one from Dennis that has a drain plug. From now on, I'll do the filter at every other fluid change...

Barry, are you sure you want to use RP ATF? According to their web site, it's only rated for MERCON / DEXRON III...it doesn't list MERCON V...
