View Full Version : No ceramic coating needed...

I got a call from Nick at Kooks this morning.
He explained that the ceramic coating isn't needed as the headers are stainless.
My full header back kit should arrive within 2-3 weeks.
So I save $250. Looks like that PI Converter isn't too far away :D
Hope the headers don't get too discolored...I plan on showing the baby.

You'll be sorry. Look at Cruztaker's post about this in the other thread you've started. Even he admit's that his Kooks headers turned colors. He says that he likes the change, but I wouldn't, and you might not. But the fact is that they WILL change colors due to heat unless you get them coated. Like I've suggested to you before, forget about Kooks coating them for you. Send them out. there are plenty of places on the net for this, but I'd probably recommend "Jet Hot".

mine changed to gold in a few days..maybe they will start to turn blue soon, but I like it too. I wrapped the starter with heat shield..and all is well. to each their own.. I hear ceramic coating does not adhere well for very long to stainless??

I agree I would never do LTH with out having them coated it not only extends there life it also helps hold the heat down.

Billy's right...There is a heat trasnsfer benefit to ceramic coating that helps the headers do their job in moving hot gasses away from the cylinder head and the combustion process, as well as keeping engine compartment temps under control too. But, this is just IMHO/.02c, I suppose we'll all learn something new about this two years down the road, when we want to refinish our headers, or, repair dried out wire looms, which ever come first.
As for ceramic coating sticking to stainless, well, I can't say much, other than to say I've not read any reports on that here, or, at other sites I frequent. If anyone has some first hand 411, please speak up?

I heard it from Nick at Kooks, which is partly why they don't recommend it on stainless headers... I have no opinion from personal knowledge on the matter... and someday a cowl hood will take care of the underhood temps..

It's all in the choice.
Mine have several thousand miles and I personally like the bronze look. There is no indication that they will ever turn blue, and the under hood temps are A-OK so far on some long azz trips.
Good luck, and happy headering!
Donny and I got the chance to tour one of the largest coating companies in the Southeastern U.S. last Friday. http://www.headercoatings.com/ Jerry Mobley gave us a rather in-depth education to the benefits of Ceramic Metallic Coating (NOT Jet Coating...which is a brand/process) and how their process works. We got to see spraying going on, the oven process and finished products that would blow you away. There is NO concern with ceramic coatings adhering to stainless steel, and anyone who tells you that...has no idea what they speak of.
Get them coated!

You'll be sorry.
I agree with this for sure. Look at some 10-15 yr old Mustangs with the OEM stainless headers. They look as nasty as cast iron manifolds.

I researched this before I had mine coated, no problems.

Yes, definitely get them coated! I am surprised with Kook's recommendations not to do so, but one thing I've learned when modding my car is that for every mod you do, somebody will advise against it for some reason.
Especially since you want to show the car. Here are shots of my headers. These are "Jethot" coated from Ford Racing.
I've heard of people putting ceramic mettalic coating on their pipes as well.

I wanted them coated...just passing on what Nick at Kook's said.
I'll check around here about getting them sent out to be coated once I get them.

Great idea. Nick told me the same thing, so I found a local coater to do it. Cost less, but took some time.

Yep...That's exactly what mine still look like today on Kenny's @1x, brand new. 'Cept they were installed just after MV-I last September.
These are off to be coated...and obviously off the car. Yeah...the gold may look cool now...but ceramic metallic coated to a polished chrome look will be even better...and forever.
Them be some headers, huh folks??!!

Yep, mine still look as good also. If I had it to do all ovr again, I think I would get the entire Kooks sytem ceramic coated w/the exception of the mufflers and the cats themselves. I think it would be good to ceramic coat the X-pipe and the muffler pipes, as well as the pipes leading into the cats.

Billy, you are right on here. I would adopt the same approach. No ceramic for the cats as I am told that will kill 'em!

I am however man enough to admit that if I had to do it again, I would have that shiney silver look, but it just wasn't an option at the time I recieved my set.
Now that they are installed, they ain't coming out now....I'll just enjoy my bronze look!

who'd headers are in your picture Todd? must have been some early pre-production runs, look at the difference in the manifold mating surfaces
