We would like to ask for some advice. We have a daily MM that is having a hard time shifting out of park. The brake light switch was replaced by the dealer about a year and a half ago. The brake lights work just fine. We checked the fuses and all the fuses are good. The shifter won't give us any trouble first thing in the morning, however after driving and parking somewhere, it refuses to get out of park. We have compensated by turning to the "on" position and shifting into neutral and then starting the car and driving home. Would anyone have any idea what the culprit may be? Thank you in advance.

When it won't come out of park you need to check the brake lights then just to be sure. The switch could work good when it is cold and later when warms fails at times ?? maybe.

We did check and the brake lights work at all times, whether the shifter is stuck in park or not. Is it possible that the brake light switch fails when electricity starts flowing through it? The only thing we can think of is that perhaps the brake light switch failed after 1 and 1/2 years? We are just looking for any other suggestions before we pay the local dealer or repair shop to replace it again.

There should be some kind of a shift interlock switch at the shifter that unlocks it after the brake is pushed. I can’t remember what the shifter assembly looks like anymore.

Here is a puzzle for someone to explain. With the battery unhooked (no power ) the shifter ( button ) is locked, then if you turn on the key it unlocks, turn key off it is locked. This is with no battery and I have never seen any manual linkage from column to shifter. Is there a cable working this manually ?
With power it is locked. First position you turn key unlocks it and second when ignitions comes on (with or without out motor running ) it re-locks then brake light power unlocks it.

There is a small secondary cable going to the shifter. It must be for that interlock.

I should know this as I removed all of this stuff from mine. Problem is that was 9 1/2 years ago and I don’t even recall what I did this morning…!
I do remember that cable now Derek. It was like 108’ long and did several laps around the backside of the dash.. I remember having a conversation with it.
