View Full Version : What Gear Ratio Should I Look For

Maybe 4.10 is great but every video I see it looks like all it does is spin the wheels. What would be best for something better than stock but not full on burning rubber all the time? Is it possible to keep the stock gas mileage with a little better gearing?

I had a 4.10 gear installed on my MM nearly 10 years ago and have not had second thoughts. It will not spin the wheels unless you want it to. You will need to get a tune if you change out the gear as the speedometer will not be accurate; in the case of a 4.10 gear, it will be off by about 8-10mph. The only way to keep the gas mileage as stock is to leave the car as stock. My mpg has dropped by only 1-2mpg. You could go with a 3.73 gear but IMO there won't be much of a difference from the stock gear, so why bother?

Thanks for the knowledge. Is it recommended to get a high stall converter to go with those new gears?

I don't have one nor felt the need for one...

You can do a higher stall, 2800ish but not necessary as mentioned, the tune corrects shift points, speedo, keeps car in powerband and better than stock tune. Car will feel 800 lbs lighter.

I have done just the 4:10 gear mod and a Marty's tune and would never go back to stock. This configuration makes the car feel like the way it should have been delivered from the factory. After the mods you will not care about the mileage. If you do not put your foot into it the 4:10 and tune are 100% drivable and feel normal but if you want to drive the car like it should be then you have it installed. As others will agree these mods are NO risk. All other mods matter if you supercharge.

Start with a Marty tune first. The X4 will come with a 3.55 and a 4.10 tune should you decide to change gears. The new tune is the best "First Mod" to a stock Marauder. It prevents the torque converter from locking up before 45MPH. The stock variable TC lockup schedule is what makes it fell sluggish.

I seem to be getting hung up on the mpg. However, in PA it is a bit expensive. I will definitely go with the marty tune and see how that goes then decide on the 4.10 gears. I appreciate everyone's advice.

Yep,
4,400lb 4 door sedans never were the best choice for MPG.....but Marauders can return decent gas mileage as long as you avoid WOT....lol.

I remember when the first mods everyone made were Tune and 4:10.

I did Tune and 4.10's in 2002, Gas Mileage dropped 3 MPG. Installed Trilogy and mileage increased 1 MPG but throttle was really touchy. Reinstalled 3.55's and mileage increased 3 MPG around town, Interstate driving was much improved mileage and got as much as 27 MPG on 3000 mile run. Throttle use was much better. Trilogy and Big Brake Kit were two best mod's I did, very enjoyable. Sold Marauder after 17 years. Now have Supercharged 2003 Lincoln Towncar that is a dream to drive.

Some new owners may not know....

The MM was originally specs with 4.10's, Ford needed to increase their corporate fuel mileage so they went with 3.55's.

I certainly hope fuel economy wasn't the goal when you bought the Marauder. Once you begin mods - that will be the last thing on the list - if even considered at all! I have had mine 17 years and did FRPP 4.10 gears over a decade ago. I have a tune to correct the speedometer and have the shift points snappier. Aside from that, rear billet control arms will only accentuate firm upshifts. I increased maybe 500rpm at freeway speeds and will comfortably cruise at 80. I have never calculated my fuel economy but hopefully after I finish my Eaton swap I can get it down to low teens or single digits. Just the way God intended.

I’m with post 12 as mine actually increased by 1 with the addition of the Trilogy and unbelievably another 2 with a pulley swap and aggressive tune thrown at it! I would have never guessed I’d actually make more by adding more weight and also more stuff for the engine to turn..

But in the end I ended up more in the single digits because my care about warranties, MPG’s, and my wallet regarding mods went completely out the window.

The single largest killer of MPG’s came when I switched to 80# injectors and a cog drive centri. I nick named name slurpy after that!

I have a 28 spine traclock 4.10 rear axel in Michigan ready to bolt on. I have a tune from Marty on with it. I have two set now.
