Yes Marty, the Cat V8-3208 diesel was a really great engine for over 35 years. I was sad to see it go non-current status but as diesel technology changed and new EPA exhaust restrictions became tighter it finally became obsolete.

I am sure there will be plenty of them still around in the next 30 years.
Glad to here you like them.

Our new ACERT engines that meet 2005 EPA clean air requirements are
getting great reviews on power and fuel economy. These truck engines are now on allocation throughout 2005.

Have a Good One!

MACS are still toys made to pacify those who cannot or will not delve into the complexities of real computers.

The WINTEL platform offers far more flexibility and capability than ANY MAC.

The small and self-absorbed MAC world is an 'isolated island' from a technical perspective.

There was once a period of time (1982 - 1986) where MACS offered far greater graphics and music capability than WINTEL offerings. That time is long past. I won't even go into other platforms like the Amiga here.

Why do MAC people always feel the need to maintain a cult of affinity for their machines? They are not Marauders after all!

The MAC faithful are somewhat entertaining for the rest of us!

Hear hear! My AS/400 have uptimes measured in years. I've even swapped processors, drives, memory and power supplies without downtime.

Hitchhicker...First, there were no Macs in 82, (debuted in 84...remember super bowl commercial) so I'm not sure what you were looking at 2 years prior.

Second, why the bashing on the MAC platform? For professional graphics, it was and is the platform of choice for most in the trade. PC's weren't even close until the early to mid 90's in the graphics trade.

Third, step up to OS X for a great experience. Unix stability, multi threading, multi tasking, multiple processor support, plus excellent application base that keeps growing. Sure, there are more apps for PC's but exactly how many versions of solitaire does a person need?

I use it because it works great. I like my island...Never a virus problem in 20 years and only 3 machines in that timeframe. Don't knock it until you try it...but that is what PC people do...I guess it is the fondness for flipping dip switches and using dos prompts.

This thread is about occupations, and I have used a MAC in mine for almost 20 years...wouldn't have my Marauder without it.

Hitchhicker...First, there were no Macs in 82, (debuted in 84...remember super bowl commercial) so I'm not sure what you were looking at 2 years prior.

It wasn't a MAC, persay, but I remember getting my first computer in Jan. of '83. An Apple IIe...

Mac users have some great SPECIFIC software available, but I don't see the same widespread third party support that the Windows environment has. For a "family" PC, where you want to surf, work, edit video and play games, the Mac becomes a little less attractive.

Example:
I started to edit home video with Ulead Video Studio, then decided it was too basic, and started to Use Pinnacle Studio. It became apparent that wasn't for me, and I started to use Adobe Premiere... Now I use Sony Vegas Video, and am currently working on AC3 audio tracks, for home DVDs, of my truck.

How many midsize -> fortune 500 companies use Macs? What do you think most of their employees have at home, because they are comfortable with it?

Ultimately, choice, comfort level and software selection is what will sell a computer to the masses, not the specific capabilities of the hardware, alone. That is why there will not be a sudden massive increase in Mac sales, anytime soon.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with video production or fortune 500 companies. I can't negate economies of scale and neither can purchasing managers at large corporations. Sure, more PC's exist. I'm not arguing that. I also recognize the additional 3rd party interest and support. I'm just tired of being told by PC snobs that my computer is a toy, when I do top quality award winning graphics work for the major wineries in California and Washinton, then come home and browse the internet, do email, write letters, play games and whatever else I've wanted to do on a computer all with a Mac. If Macs suck so bad, why is Apple still in business? Because they produce innovative products that work, and work pretty easily. I've watched with horror my PC friends trying to add a drive to their computer, thumbing through manuals, running endless installs and carefully flipping the correct switches on the back to get it to work. What took an experienced user a couple of hours to do, I have done in under 10 minutes with my old mac, and that is but one example. I know things are better with the newer flavors of Windows, but I was doing this stuff back in the late 80's on my Mac.

As for the speed review, that Mac is so slow by todays standards. A G4 is a snail compared to the latest G5 products. Night and day. But in reality a fast Mac and a fast PC are both up to the task, Macs are just different, which any Marauder owner should be able to appreciate.:)

But in reality a fast Mac and a fast PC are both up to the task, Macs are just different, which any Marauder owner should be able to appreciate.:)No offense SAC, but IMHO it is the 'Cult of MAC' folks that either act or aspire to be snobs. I may have missed the MAC inception by a couple of years, but my previous point about the 'glory years' of the MAC platform was accurate.
I have never seen an instance where a 'cult of mac' person didn't try to 'pontificate' about their 'superior' mac.

There was a 3-4 year period when nothing in WINTEL could touch the graphics and music capability of Macs, but that time passed long ago.

Windows didn't become a capable platform until 3.1. Those IRQ's and DIP switches enabled folks like me to turn off the shelf WINTEL machines into the dream machines of their day. I remember struggling all afternoon with my new CM ROM and SoundBlaster I purchased for $500, and that was at a computer show. As an early adopter of this and other technology, I have often paid more and worked more to have the latest in technology. There were no CD ROM Macs at that time anywhere.

The advent of 'plug and play' made the PC capable of hosting virtually any type of device.

To me, the Macs still seem to be an over-priced isolated computing platform.

Their 'studio display' monitors and titanium shell laptops are very good looking though each has received less than steller reviews in real world use. The modern looking design of the latest two desktop PC's (iMAC) was considered quite trendy about 3 years ago and probably saved the company.

Best Regards,

David

The iMac did indeed save the company but that was back in 97/98.

Does anyone here know about the "It's a Jeep Thing, You Wouldn't Understand" slogan? As the President of a 4X4 club I see it all the time and it really turns me off.

The thing is that not every Jeep owner with that sticker on their Jeep has a snobby attitude. On the other hand, virtually EVERY Jeep owner has found something in their Jeep that makes it very special to them. I, personally, see the Jeep as a very impractical vehicle and don't know why anyone would buy one but I guess that means that "I don't understand."

While I personally don't know what it is I still understand where they are coming from and I respect them for that. I don't see people getting all worked up (almost cultish) with their Hummers or Xterras. What is it about the Jeep that does that? I don't know but it is there and that is cool.

And so, with Mac users, almost every Mac user has found something in their Mac which makes them as fiercely loyal if not more loyal to their Mac as Jeep owners are to their Jeeps. Regreattably, some of them come across snobby but not all.

I don't see PC owners being as cultishly loyal to their PCs as I do Mac users so and so, again, perhaps they should be respected for that. Even if it is just out of curiosity that we do so.

I say that the same could go for Marauder owners, too. From many points of view our cars are inadequate against other cars in one way or another but there is something about it that inspires us and makes us fiercely loyal to them. I just don't see people going 'gaa-gaa' over the Chrysler Sebring of the Taurus.

I will say that it all needs to be taken with a grain of salt, no matter what side of the fence you are on. I am a Mac user and I could probably demonstrate most of the advantages to owning a Mac that would justfify the price. But that info is only worth it to someone who is tired of their PC and looking for a change.

I am a Marauder owner and could probably demonstrate most of the bennies of owning one but again, it wouldn't appeal to someone looking for a Honda Hybrid.

I am NOT a Jeep owner and never will be. All the Jeep owners in the world could try to convince me but it will never work. But I still respect the Jeep owners of the world for being so enthusiastic for what they think they have found. See my point?

I guess that, as Marauder owners, we should be able to understand those feelings. I'll go one step further and bring up the owners of charged cars. NOW we are talking about getting emotional about products. It is just a matter of personal taste and having an open mind.

Now, I came to this thread because it asked about what people do for work and saw some Mac/PC conversation and got off track a bit. :) In the interest of commenting on topic my profession is Real Estate Investor. I own multi family properties and buy single family houses that I fix up and sell.

Best,

PS: QUK SVT said "How many midsize -> fortune 500 companies use Macs?"

What a funny question. To highlight the logic imagine if he has asked, "How many major auto manufacturers install vortech blowers?" The resultant storm would only further emphasize how strongly some folks like their product choices and how that enthusiasm should be appreciated.

You're right Dan, things got off track a bit. In the fix up side of your work, do you do the repairs yourself? How bad are the fixers you pick up?

I tend to grab the ones that are mostly cosmetic fixers. I tend to sub contract most of the work but the subs know that I am going to be working around them while they are there. It helps me to stay on top of the job and move things along.

I can do a lot of the work myself. I know basic plumbing and electrical. I am a very experienced trim carpenter and know cabinet and bath fisture installation. I stay off of roofs, don't do 'rock', and don't do paint. I have found my skills are more valuable elsewhere so I always sub those out.

Some of the fixers can be pretty bad. I bought one last year that had a bunch of broken windows, a dead furnace and frozen pipes. I have one now that is requiring a new kitch and new bath, minor rock repair, h-wood floor refinishing and paint.

I am kind of liucky in that I have been around the work and have a good sense for the way things are supposed to be done and in what order.

I hope that this answers your question.

Best,

Dan

You guys may be right about what you say between WANNA BE MACS and Blue Screened Windows PCs
but the owners of these electronics appliances will all tell you the same thing...
The very minute a NEW COMPUTER comes out, this one will be OBSOLETE !!! :mad2: :bigcry:

But there was a PC that was the ****zle !!!
It was made by a company called Commodore.
It started with the 64 and the 128, and then grew up to the AMIGA !!!

The AMIGA was the BOMB !!!
The AMIGA did things that a Windows based PC or a Macintosh DREAMED of doing !!!

But in all fairness, I've learned to look at all of these things for what they are...
Electronic appliances.
As long as your toaster doens't burn the bread, it will live another day to make another slice of toast.
As long as the  is cold in the fridge, the fridge will remain plugged into the outlet...
and so on...

As long as whatever PC you own, can do whatever you want it to do, ENJOY IT !!!
When it gets too old to do what you want, take the $$$ you would have invested into it and UPGRADE at least 2 generations,
and enjoy the new level of processing, you thought would never exist, when you purchased your last PC !!!

Getting back to the post...

I work for a very prestigious computer hardware manufacturer that provides the very HARDWARE that makes your PCs fun to LISTEN to !!!
I am responsible for Retail Level Marketing, Training, and Consumer Education.
I have also frequented a few PC USer Group meetings to demonstrate our products.
My geographical area stretches from, but not limited to, Paramus, NJ to Middletown, NY,
through Rockland and Westchester counties, to Norwalk Connecticut, and to Southern Westchester.
You will see this Road Warrior rolling on most major highway and roadways anytime from Wednesday through Sundays.
I tend to do most of my work during this time, with Retail Store Demonstrations on either Saturdays or Sundays.

Its a bummer for weekend family life, but it pays the bills and gives me a tremendous amount of flexibility
so that I can be around for my wife and our 7 year old son when ever either of them need me.

Ken what is made at the plant, why the shut down ,how long have you been there[ retiring?]

We build the Econoline Van at Lorain Assembly(only the Trim and Chassis Dept). The Thunderbird and Cougar were built here until that half left in 1997. Our jobs will move 17 miles east to Ohio Assembly, where they presently build and paint the bodies and then truck them to our plant, for Final Assembly. They've done this for the past 30 years. A seemingly inefficent way to build a vehicle, but it was cheaper to spent a million dollars a year on transporting the bodies than it was to combine both plants, spending hundreds of millions of dollars. Ohio Assembly will lose the Escape production which they retooled for last year after production of the Mercury Villager/Nissan Quest ended. (and the shareholders wonder why Ford is in sad shape, with financial decisions like these. Escape with a two year run at Ohio, The E-450/550 had about a one year run at our plant before they pulled the plug last year.)
As for me, I'll have less than a year to go till retirement. If they offer an early out to those of us with 28 years. I will accept and move on with my life, allowing a younger guy to keep their job. I've worked and planned for 30 and out for too long to not take advantage of this change. Also, I've worked seasonally the last eight years as a Tax Preparer for H&R Block, so I've got a little something to keep me busy during the winter, when its too nasty to drive, let alone wash and wax, my Marauder.

Great thread... sorry I missed it the first time around.

Dan... I normally agree with you, but I would buy a Jeep. Normally I pull a trail mower behind my garden tractor, effectively doubling it's swath. My tractor broke, so I tried towing it behind the F150, but had to slip the clutch the whole time because the mower couldn't mow as fast as the truck could go slow. Also, the grass was wet, so the 2wd, okay 1 wheel drive truck kept getting stuck, and the wheelbase is too long to make same-day steering corrections. A CJ or Wrangler would be perfect... and I'd never have to drive it on the street so my friends would never even know I had one!
