View Full Version : Birds keep bouncing off my front bumper

Hey all,
I've noticed the oddest thing over the last few months, and it just happened again today.
If I'm driving over 50mph, and a bird swoops out from the side of the road they bounce off the front end of my car. I've never had this happen before in 25+ years of driving, and now its happened 3 times in the last few months.
Has anyone else noticed this? I suspect there must be some kind of aerodynamic low pressure area in the front that prevents the birds from swooping up like you would expect, and just sucks them in.
I now find myself Braking for Birds. That's crazy.

In Michigan they sell the deer whistles to keep the deer from getting hit. Maybe they make a bird whistle. When you drive down the road it makes cat sounds.
Deer get hit by cars because they see the deer on the fenders of cars during hunting season and they say, "Hey! How does that deer get a ride?" Then they see the sign with the deer silhouette and they say, "This must be where the deer taxi stops." So, they jump into the road to flag one down and WHACK!

Marty told me once he sees a lot of "birds" when driving around in his Marauder...but frankly...I think those are the result of his poor driving ability.

Instead of pressure it could be some sort of sound. Deer are supposedly diverted due to those dang deer whistles people have and cannot even hear.
Maybe something in your car is "whistling" (something we as humans can't hear) and drawing attention to it.
Could be...you never know.

The bird population in my area of Virginia seems to have increased drastically from last year --- double at least. I am glad someone is out there running them down 'cause they are sure enjoying messing up my wash & wax jobs.
Haven't a clue as to the suicidal birds in your area. Maybe a similar increase in the local bird population .... or a sadistic desire to imitate the squirrels road crossing attempts.

SWC69, I don't have any problems with birds... but I continually have small japanese cars with huge rear wings get caught on the front of my Marauder grille. This happens especially at the drag strip where these pieces of Honda junk flock to show how LOUD and SLOW they are!!! I shouldn't rag on these little turds, they save gas so that I can burn it in my cars!

I'm almost sorry about offering a "serious" response here. I was having too much fun, but what the heck.
This deals with very very small winged life. BUGS.
The marauder gets more bugs squished on the front end than any other car I've ever had.
I can only guess that whatever aerodynamic feature causes the massive bug cemetary on the marauders nose is related to the birds getting hit.

I was telling a buddy about this thread and he told me a story about his bird strike.
He says that he was at the strip with a Mustang that had a big ram air scoop when he hit a seagull. He says the bird went into the scoop and really tore up the airfilter. There were bird pieces everywhere.

Can't help you here. HAVE had a squirrel get tromped under the left front tire; felt the bump. Got a 1/2 credit for a sparrow last week; car in front of me got 'im and I finished the job.
Now if I can find the raccoon that peed on my rims and the bird that keeps pooping on the hood even when I'm parked in the carport...that'll definitely be a case of cold-blooded Marauder then....

In almost 30 years of driving, I had never hit a bird. Since I got the Marauder, I'll bet I've hit a half dozen. Not just flying birds either, altough they account for most of my bird strikes. I had a Roadrunner just step out in front of me on my way out west on the Burnouts Accross America tour while I was in New Mexico. So bottom line is yeah, you're not nuts SWC, there is something to this. I also run the deer whistles, but the birds don't seem to be affected by them. I have seen them work on almost every other critter, but not the birds.
