I'm heading to Iraq next week for about 8 months, at which time the MM will sit in the garage. Any tips or tricks on storing the car for that period of time? I have a neighbor that wouldn't mind starting it every now and then, if this is the preferred method. I really have no idea. Any advice?

Don't worry about it. I kept my car outside, covered, over winter. I didn't start it for 3 months, and it fired right up (below freezing!!).

Get your buddy to start it once a month till the engine is at operating temp, and it'll be fine.

And keep your head down. Don't give your life for your country, let someone else die for his.

Fuel stabilizer is good. Tank should be full or empty. Not in between. Tell them to run the A/C when they run the car.

If they are not going to move the car around for you. (Which is the best bet) the tires should come off or imo you can get flat spots. Then frame goes up on blocks or stands, but you shouldn't let the suspension hang lose it should be slightly blocked also. Leave air ride off.

Good luck, watch your butt.

Bye the way where are you located?

I would say a full tank is better, that way there is less surface exposed to air (rust).

Better yet, get someone you trust to drive it around for 15 minutes once per month.

I used to use stablizer when I stored the vette for the winter but I've found that just filling the tank is good enough for 5-6 months----not that the stablizer is a bad idea. I don't like the idea of an empty tank---too much chance for rust as well as water condensation.

I also change the oil and filter (Mobil 1, but I don't want to start an oil discussion) and run the engine so fresh, clean oil has covered the internal surfaces.

Starting it once a month is good and driving it around the block is better.

Good luck with both Iraq and your car storage.

I agree the tank should be full as there is less room for moisture buildup. Keep it covered in the garage and there shouldn't be a problem. Stay safe.

MARAUDER:
Fresh Oil
Fuel Stabil
Sears auto trickle charger (cheap)
Small pieces of plywood under each wheel (if car cannot be jack standed)
Cover wheels if animals (particularly cats) will have access to the area
Cover car (with sheets if a cover is n/a)
Don't let any one drive it....period!

GUNSLINGER:
Watch your ass
Stay with your group, and watch their asses
Come home safely and speedy

I'm sure I can say that we will all pray for you, and anticipate your return.

Thanks for all the advice. And more importantly the support, it means a lot more to us that you would imagine.

I'll be an FSO for some Infantry battalion in 2BDE, 25th ID. Most of our area of responsibility is in the North with HQ in Kirkuk. Should be a good time, I'll keep you guys posted when I get the chance.

Marty, thats good advice, thanks.

Gunslinger...

I'll keep you and your Marauder in my prayers.

I'll pray that your 8 month tour doesn't get extended as it did for other troops.
Keep your wits about you, and please stay alert.
There are people there that will do unheard of things to prove nothing.
Please stay out of their way.
All we want you to do is to return home safely.

May God Bless You and Watch Over You while you are away from home.

Good Luck to you!

p.s. If you are in the Mid-West, South-West, or South-East US,
I can't tell since your profile is empty, go to any GENUINE
American Indian shops and ask them for 5 Apache Tear Drops.
They are small black obsidian stones that will pass light if you hold it up to a light source.
4 stones symbolize Water, Fire, Earth, and Air. The necessary elements for survival.
The 5th is protection for your own spirit.

Do not make them into jewelry.
They need to be carried on your person whether in your pocket or in a pouch.
I carry 5 stones whenever I travel on long trips and I swear by them for saving my life several times.

Meninblk,

It's been a long time since I heard anyone talk of Apache tears, Used to visit my grandmother in AZ. many years ago. Used to play with a bowl of those Apache Tears. Sounds like a good idea to me.

And Gunslinger Good luck to you.

Dont forget to set the car up on jackstands high enough to get the tires off the ground so the vehicle can rest on the suspension. Crack the windows and go to wal-mart and buy a box of baking soda and put the box in the floor(open) this should keep the car smelling nice a fresh. Get 2 old sock and put some charcoal in them and stuff the 2 tailpipes with them, this will absorb moister and keep the insides from rusting.

Hey, like everyone else said. Keep your head down! As far as the car goes, everyone here has had great ideas. The only thing i would add is if you have a friend drive it......... tell them not to drive it Alabama on the I-20 on any rainy day coming down an on ramp! Good luck over here (basicly). If you show up in Afghanistan drop over and say hi.
