kashvili:

You mean the Belt-Minder?...yes...follow the directions in the owner's manual, but where it says on page 94 "After step 3, the restraint system warning light will be turned on for three seconds", be advised that they are talking about the AIR BAG warning light, not the seat-belt warning light, as you would think. Other than that, the instructions do work.

honestly.....

I never wore a seat belt until I got the MM. I only drive about 4500 miles per year and it's most city driving. My wife always yelled at me but 2 things changed my mind:

1. This is a way more powerful beast than the Jeep I had before.

2. The wife is pregnant and I think about the future a little more now.

so I guess the little reminder is there to 'remind' me to buckle up and of #1 and #2, above.

Its strange - seeing people not wear their seatbelts. I've seen enough accidents in my day (as an EMT) to know that its just not a good idea to go without it - powerful car or not. I recall an accident recently where a delivery truck ran a stop sign and two 18 year old girls had to slam on the brakes, and hit him anyhow. They were doing about 50MPH and probably hit at 30-35 MPH. The entire front of their brand new honda was destroyed. Initially it was dispatched as an ejection - as in one of them not wearing the seatbelt. Fortunately that was a mistake... one of them ended up with a broken finger and a black eye, and the driver had a bruised knee. If they were not wearing their seatbelts, this 30-35MPH collision would have gone right through the windshield and probably under the still moving delivery truck.

So... next time you think about why that belt-minder is there, consider the possiblity of a relativly low speed accident (30-35MPH) and picture yourself flying through the windshield and landing under the moving wheels of a 2 ton delivery truck.

Andrew, slowpoke and all:

Just want to clarify that I do wear the seat belt, I just don't need a stupid little chime to tell me so...

Honestly, the car dings at me if I leave the keys in, open the door with the lights on, forget the seat belt, forget my mother-in-law's birthday...
