For those of you contemplating the badgeless look, I would recommend using Dental Floss in lieu of wire to remove badges. It won't scratch like wire. It gets in there tighter and it is just as fast.

Man - what an assbag.

Too bad you couldn't catch the guilty party ... I thought of a really great punishment

Anyone remember the movie Raiders Of The Lost Ark ?.

There was a scene .. when someone reached for some medallion that just came out of a fire or something like that (been a LONG time since I saw that movie - so bear with me on the specifics) ...

And the design of the medallion basically branded itself to the palm of this guys hand(later in the movie you see him & is hand again & it's was there clear a day - which I thought was kind of funny).

Well ... catch this lil SOB - detain him - heat the emblem up .... then stick it on his forehead & hold it there for about 5 minutes. Course' what you could be saying during this is entirely up to you ... but I'd say something along the line of ...

"So you REALLY like these Mercury emblems huh ? - I would hate for you to lose yours like I did - lots of theives out there these days ya' know ... but need not you worry - when we're done here ... you'll have your VERY OWN to cherish & remember for the rest of your life ... that will ALWAYS be with you - WHEREVER you go - & no one will be able to just walk off with it ... like what happened to mine"

Yeah, That was the SS officer and he was grabbing the gold head piece for the Staff of RAH sp? His hand Smoked quite a bit!! I think that you would have to burn the Mercury Emblem into his forehead backwards so that the little PUNK could enjoy it when he looked into the mirror every morning!!

The upside to this issue is the cost of replacing the badge is 35.00 retail U.S. and it looks like the damage is not too bad.

Thanks everyone. I'm still so angry

Just got back from my insurance agency and my favorite auto body place. My insurance agent can't look at the car till Friday at least (lots of hail damaged vehicles from last weeks storm, $10 million in property damage).

For a $35 emblem that is on the back of every Mercury vehicle, they caused $350 in paint damage. I can go badgeless for $476. They'll weld the holes, and repaint the trunk.

I also am having them look at the car in general for a full repaint because my dealer has been dicking me around for almost a year - and still hasn't even looked at my car. They paint lots of show cars. These are the owners personal vehicles:

http://www.peachcitybeachcruise.com/images/cars/49monarch.jpg
http://www.peachcitybeachcruise.com/images/cars/h7.jpg

I'm afraid it was targeted. There aren't many nice cars on my block, but there is a Mercury minivan, and a 2002 Cougar 3 houses down. I'm also on an out of the way crescent, so there isn't much drive by traffic unless you live there. And about 3 kids in their teens. It narrows the possibilities somewhat. I'm fairly sure my suspect is from the same family that hit my Crown Vic with their Quad, and weren't going to tell me about it until another neighbour told me about it first.

The car was also parked between my sisters Focus and my CV, with the back end 3' from my house.

I was thinking of posting a very large sign starting with "Thank you for Vandalizing my Car . . ." on a 4X8' sheet of plywood in front of my car and letting the other neighbours come to the same conclusion as me. I can only come up with the ending "... and while one day they may find your body, they will never identify it."

Al Gore took it - along with inventing the Internet he's also figured a way to get to Mercury in his eco-rocket. He needs the badge on his forehead to enter the realm. It's a secret code thingy.

Seriously though, I'm sorry some jackass vandalized your MM.

Yeah, if I could narrow it down, I confront the guy/girl with an officer...that's always fun...people these days...you're right, they should just LEAVE PEOPLE'S STUFF ALONE!!!

Fishing Line is a good idea. I've used fine brass wire without problem though.

Dental floss would have to be pretty stout stuff to not break I'd think. (considering how easily it breaks flossing teeth)

Doc,

I know it is off topic but for some reason I feel that turning the conversation to paint removal may be appropriate.

Check this product out....
Krylon OFF. (http://www.krylon.com/main/product_template.cfm?levelid=5&sub_levelid=12&productid=1780&content=product_details)

A while ago I knew someone who wanted me to remove the paint on their car for them. It is such a messy job and I was willing to do it for free. I used a can of aerosol paint remove. It was so easy and convenient to use. I mean, if I wanted to I could have walked right past their car and sprayed it and gotten a fast head start on the job without event stopping to look. In fac, the aerosol application is also the quietest so the paint removal job can be done while someone is sleeping in the car and it won't even disturb them provided the car is parked in a well ventilated area.

I never did this but I would bet that if you really wanted to get a good head start the best time to apply this for maximum effect would be the night before beginning the final removal stage. In fact, I bet you could split a can up between multiple cars, motorcycles and even quads so as to get the most out of each can.

Mind you, I am no body man but I am quite sure that the product I am referring to will produce the results that you are looking for.

Best of luck with your paint project. Please don't let us know how it turned out.

Dan :cool4:

PS: I am really sorry about the vandalism. I bet you must really want to get even. I am afraid that I don't have any ideas for you as I am not that type of person. I am confident that your local police will investigate this thoroughly and bring the vandals to justice!

I would also use plastic gloves for your protection. If those chemicals can remove paint, imagine what they do to bare skin that overspray may come into contact with.

Speaking of those, most tire companies will give away valve core removers. Removing valve cores is quick and easy and takes less than 10 seconds per tire. Again, only do this if you have a friend who wants you to take the air out of their tires for them.

Be careful about losing the cores, though. It is a huge inconveneince when they need to be replaced. Especially if you lose all four.

Best,

Dan
