I bought my car used and the previous owner stuck a piece of velcro on the dash (to hold his radar detector maybe?). How can I get that velcro off the dash and get the residual sticky stuff off?

Try a product called "Goof Off." However, as with all products of this nature, try it on an inconspicuous spot first!!

{Ahem....}
It is obvious that you need to get out more....
Both products exist. I have seen Goof Off used mostly like a paint remover where you accidentally paint too far over the edge of a project and need to remove what you don't want, or you drip some paint on the floor or someplace. It may also work well as an adhesive remover. Haven't tried it for that.
Goo Gone is what I have used to remove things like tape residue, or the sticky residue from price tags, etc. Works real well.
Like above, please check on an inconspicuous spot first, or you might remove the color from your dash as well as removing the sticky stuff.

There's label and sticker removers out there too that may not be as harsh on your dash. I would try something a bit milder before going for the heavyweight stuff.
Then again, anything with acetone in it shyould do the trick too - like nail polish remover. Not sure what that might do to the dash tho' :D
Uh, belt sander/80 grain?

Goof Off may be too strong, this stuff removes paint.
The Goo Gone is made with oranges and may be less volitile.

Suggestion:
Try an odorless paint thinner for oil-based paints. Small amt on a piece fo paper towel.
Caution: do not use goof oof or goo gone on dash. May remove the color.

How can I get that velcro off the dash and get the residual sticky stuff off?I've found the best product for this problem to be plain old WD40. it takes all types of adhesives off of paint, glass, trim. but don't forget to thoroughly clean off all residue when your done. WD40 does everything!

WD40 and rub w/ a cloth - won't hurt a thing. Good luck.

How can I get that velcro off the dash and get the residual sticky stuff off?Beware of the hyrocarcon solvent type cleaners on plastic, but with a little work, you may find that rubbing alcohol works ok. My 2 cents!

Goo Gone is a Citrus Based cleaner that does a fantastic job of getting rid of most adhesives.
It won't harm vinyl or leather, and can be used on just about any surface.
The best part about it is that it is water soluble.

IMO the WD40 is your best bet. Apply it sparingly to a soft colth, then rub the effected area gently.

Goof off while very effective will eat any type of plastics I've come accross. My favorite trick for getting off adhesives is with Windex. Apply let soak, work it off. It may take several attempts, but I've never ruined anything using it. Good luck Dan.

3M makes a great adhesive remover that's available at most paint and auto parts stores.
