After seeing your desktop, I thought to myself . o O ( "Hey, I'm not the only one who thought those proving grounds photos rocked" )

But then I read your comment and realized that yours is actually a picture of YOU .. because you were there. I guess that means I really AM a dork!! :)

Yikes, you people are serious... I've always run a plain blue background... Not exactly very exciting. I'm also one of those "Million icons on the desktop" type people... :)

Desktop icons accumulate pretty quickly over here. The left-most two columns are the permanent fixtures. Everything else is "to-do" and/or current project related files. Every so often I have a delete fest and get back to two columns (but not for long).

Oops, it's the Firehawk on my desktop at home. But people know when it's my login at work as soon as they see the black Marauder on the screen.

Surprising.

Does anyone besides me have the Marauder convertible desktop?

I have the Marauder at home and a 2003 TBird desktop at work.

Me too. My daughter uses my computer sometimes, so the icons keep her from looking for stuff and messing things up. :)

It's not as bad as it looks. You get use to it after a while. It's condensed above of course, so the image wouldn't be 2 million bytes. :)

By the way, the image is from Blazing Saddles. The new sheriff is arriving in town.

Call me boring:

my background on my laptop is a non-faded version of the following, on a completely black background so that you can't see the border of the image. The faded version is online because I use it (tiled) as a background on the GTA section of my web page.
http://www.tripletransam.com/gta/misc/gtaback.JPG

For as long as I've had work-provided laptops (mid 90s?) that unfaded image (on a black background) has been the background of my desktops. Call me superstitious, but I've had 3 work laptops in my possession (mid90s-1998, 1998-2004, 2004-present) and in all cases that image has been the very first thing I set up. When I'm on-site or in the lab, my laptop desktop ALWAYS sticks out like a sore thumb against the sea of company-logo and/or plain blue backgrounds.

Speaking of superstition, no matter the ambient temperature, I always bring my GTA jacket with me when working on a customer site. It's a spring/fall-type black jacket with the GTA logo embroidered on the back. I think I was wearing it when I met Paul C. and Todd earlier this year. It does tend to get cold in the equipment and control rooms of customer sites, but sometimes I think it's become more of a ritual than anything else.

That's my work laptop(s)... on my home desktop, I have the following centered once again on a completely black background.

It's kind of large, but my desktop is double wide, 2 X 1024 X 768.

This is the one I do most work on. It's a Linux machine that controls my NOC (Network Operations Centre). It's the front line defending my network from the bad people with too much time on their hands.

The picture is from the newly re-digitized photos of Apollo 11.

http://www.apolloarchive.com/apollo_gallery.html

It makes me feel insignificant and godlike at the same time.

At home, I've got an image of NBCShooter's session with Arriana on the hood of his car. (Nuff said.)

On the 'puter at work, I have a photo I took on my honeymoon.

We have a double-monitor set up for our Bloomberg terminal, which I usually have images from the Hubble telescope -- courtesy of NASA. But I did have a great overhead shot of coroner's guys scrapping Chung Mong-hun, chief executive of the Hyundai Group, off the pavement after he leapt to his death amid a financial scandal. I thought it appropriate, but several more squeamish colleagues couldn't stand it for long. (I love having access to the unfiltered photos wires, you should see some of the stuff that'll never make into the newspaper.)
