As a few of you who I'm closest with here know...I've been a little pre-occupied the last 3 weeks. I haven't been very helpful and have not gotten back to you with PMs. Well...there is a reason for that....

Three weeks ago today, 3 very dear friends of mine had a tragic occurance. My wife and I have been friends for over 16 years with a couple who could not have children, yet through God's blessings were able to adopt the most beautiful little girl from southern China nearly 4 years ago. Mia is a precious little girl who we've watch grow over these past 4 years. She is "best buds" with my 2 girls...we've spent vacations together at their beach house, they've been to Atlanta nearly every 4-5 months to stay with us, it's been a joyous time seeing what Mia brought to our friends and how she enriched their lives.

But, that joy changed three weeks ago today, when mia was at a Day Camp at the Lake Toxaway country Club in the mountains of North Carolina. Mia and her other 8 friends were to go swimming on that Thursday. The details of the story are still a little sketchy...but, Mia was found at the bottom of the pool, lifeless. She was airflighted to the Greenville, SC Medical Center where she was in Pediatric ICU until Wednesday of this week. Mia was transferred here to one of the best Childrens facilities in the country at the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital about 3 miles from my house here in Atlanta. Mia continues to be in a comatose state, with no true function other than breathing on her own.

What do we need....we need prayers. Although she is under the best care she can get...Mia's only hope will come from Devine Intervention. No other needs are necessary, just please, for all you "Prayer Warriors" out there.....please add Mia Evert to your prayers. This request is coming from the bottom of my heart as a friend, a father and as a Believer. Tomorrow afternoon, I'll be spending most of my time at the hospital as Mia will have surgery to place a direct, feeding tube in her stomach. Please pray for her recovery, and for her safety during this proceedure.

For info on Mia, there is a website that has been established. It is unusual that you DON'T have to put in the "www." in front of it. The site is:

http://thestatus.com/

click on "View a Patient Page" in the top Menu.

you will get a new window with a box for "Last Name of Patient I.D."

type - evert

and in the "Password" box, type - miaevert1

I needed to reach out to as many as I can, as I know the power of prayer is awesome and in this case, what is needed at this time in a fervent manner.

Thanks for taking the time reading this, and thanks in advance for your prayers for Mia.

If any little word of ours can make one life the brighter;
If any little song of ours can make one heart the lighter;
God help us speak that little word, and take our bit of singing
and drop it in some lonely vale to set the echoes ringing.

If any little love of ours can make one life the sweeter;
If any little care of ours can make one step the fleeter;
If any little help may ease the burden of another;
God help us love and care and strength to help along each other.

If any little thought of ours can make one life the stronger;
If any cheery smile of ours can make its brightness longer;
then let us speak that thought today, with tender eyes aglowing;
So God may grant some weary one
shall reap from our glad sowing. (Author unknown)

I would be happy to get on my knees and pray for Mia. God bless.

UPDATE:

I wanted to post something, 'cause I know there are so many of you out there faithfully praying for Mia and her family.

Her condition continues with some improvements, each day there are signs of answered prayers on Mia's awareness. We continue to pray for continued improvements in her condition. She is still not as alert or reacting to stimulous of any kind like we are praying for, so please continue along those lines in your thoughts and prayers.

Today is Mia's father's birthday and we are going to try and steal him away tonight for a dinner out.

Thanks again to ALL of you for your continued thoughts and prayers for Mia and her family.

UPDATE:

I just wrote this in response to one of the many PMs I've received from so many of you asking about Mia's progress. Thank you again, to all of you for your fervent and continued prayers.

It is a very tragic situation that Mia and her family continue to struggle with. There are small "bits" of good news of answered prayers. Mia has done some small things in the last week...a faint cry...a sneeze...two things that she had not done since being pulled from the water. Although these don't seem like much, these are things that have not been "performed" in over a month.

Please continue your prayers for Mia and her family as they are being answered, as we are all promised...even in small ways she is being touched by THE Healing Hand.

Thanks,

martyo

Mia makes progress...Mia struggles. We celebrate her tiny improvements...we struggle with her. Another week of ups and downs.

Mia continues to make progress in her therapies -- little steps forward on a long, long road. She continues to strengthen the muscles in her neck -- now turning it from side to side in her bed or wheelchair. She also lifts her head for a few seconds, when asked to do so by her favorite therapist. Often she will do this a couple of times, upon request, then shut her eyes in an effort to ignore the request to do it again.

She also is moving her mouth more, and plays a game with us -- the "sticking out our tongues game". (Very attractive, I know... but we will get back to working on her (and our) manners later.)

Today, in therapy, she had her first popsicle -- rubbed on her lips and tongue. Hopefully, her swallowing and mouth movements will continue to improve and a "swallow study" will be done in the coming weeks -- this a required test before any foods or drinks can be re-introduced to Mia.

Mia had her first cast removed last Monday, and her left foot movement had improved to the point where her second cast was set at the 90 degree angle goal. This cast was on until Thursday, and when it was removed, both feet had the "range of motion" required. Her left knee continues to bother her with stiffness, so the therapists massage it often.

Mia also was diagnosed this week with an intestinal infection (contracted in the hospital), and is being treated with a strong antibiotic which creates as much discomfort as the illness. She struggles with the symptoms of a stomache virus, and cries a lot (of course). This has interrupted some of her therapy sessions and keeps us up all the time, working to help her or comfort her. It also leads to agitation and "storming", as she struggles with "feeling bad". This has made for some very long days and nights.

Family and friends continue to stand by us, and pray for all of us, which keeps us going.

Prayers Answered
* Mia is consistently showing signs of progress in her therapies -- with the improvements noted above, Mia scored three points higher this week over last week.
* Mia's arms and legs are more relaxed and less affected by the spasms which have bothered her in the past.

Prayers Requested
* Please pray that Mia's episodes of "storming" and spasms will subside completely.
* Please pray that Mia will be more and more alert, and follow simple directions with greater frequency.
* Please pray that Mia will make steady progress in her rehabilitation.
* Please continue to pray for Mia's complete and full recovery.

Okay folks I need a favor.

My good friend Todd has been given an involuntary leave of absence from our site.

So, he asked me, and all of you, for an important favor.

Today is Mia's birthday. Todd was able to go and visit with Mia, together with his daughters.

The prayers are working. Mia is making miraculous progress.

Mia has been moved out of her vegetative/comatose state.

As a result, Todd and I would sure appreciate everyone redoubling their efforts in praying for this beautiful and special little girl's continued progress and recovery.

Thanks and God bless you all.

UPDATE:

I wanted to give an update for all of you that have been involved in praying for Mia's recovery. Mia continues to make progress, albeit in what could be considered "small steps"...in the grand scheme of things...they are nothing short of miraculous.

Yesterday both of my girls went to the hospital and Mia was able to join them outside on the playground in her special wheelchair. It was a joy to see the reaction she had being with them and being outside the hospital on a glorious Sunday afternoon. Mixed emotions were also present as you could tell Mia just wanted to get up and run and play with my girls like she has done for the last several years....but, as she watched them and they even took her out of her chair to go down the slide with them...it was a joyous occasion.

Thank you to all of you who have prayed for Mia and her family...she continues to make great strides, and although she has not gained any motor or speech skills. Her awareness of her surroundings is starting to come around. Your prayers are at work through His hand...and I wanted to let you know the glorious news of Mia's continued progress.

Thank You!!!

news updates
http://thestatus.com/images/clearpixel.gif
26-Sep-04 09:49 PM - Marilynn : September 26, 2004

Another week...seemingly endless at times and yet I feel surprised that 8 days have passed since I last wrote.

Mia continues to make progress, for which we are truly grateful. I was asked this week "To what do you attribute Mia's recovery to this point?" I gave a one word answer, "Prayer". Of course, her medical teams and wonderful therapists are working tirelessly for her little victories, but without the thousands of prayers and God's healing hand, Mia's progress would not be possible.

Mia continues to work hard in her therapies and her therapists continue to push her. They have started "walking" her across the floor -- holding her under her arms and moving her legs forward, left and then right. At first, she did not move her right leg without the therapists moving it for her, but today, both legs moved forward when prompted. It is so difficult for her that she usually cries throughout the entire episode, but at the end of the session I hold her and rock her and she calms quickly. Also, this week her swallowing began to improve a little, so we pray that she will begin to make more progress here and will be able to take and pass the "swallow study" in due course. We so want her to be able to take food by mouth, and have promised her a Lime Freeze (a favorite of Mia's and her Granddad) from Steak and Shake (or as Mia always calls it "Milk and Shake").

The spasms with her arms and legs continue to diminish and her hands are open more. Also, her knees are bending more, and she is not having to wear the knee braces as frequently.

Unfortunately, the intestinal infection and stomach upset remain. The antibiotic she is taking is also very hard to tolerate, so we are constantly struggling with "stomach problems". She is on several new medicines to combat these problems, but so far, none have done more than provide temporary relief. Another reason to pray for swallowing...

We remain overwhelmed and humbled by the outpouring of love and support we receive every day. Please keep your prayers coming, and know that although we cannot respond, we read (and re-read) and treasure every note.

Prayers Answered
* Mia is consistently showing signs of progress in her therapies.
* Mia is following a few simple directions, and is seems to understand conversations around her.
* Mia is recognizing those around her, and is responding more consistently with her "yes" and "no" nods.
* Mia's "storming" episodes seem to be gone, and her spasms are diminishing.

Prayers Requested
* Please pray that Mia's swallowing will continue to improve, and that she will pass the "swallow study" required before she can be given anything by mouth.
* Please pray that Mia's spasms and the muscle tightness in her legs and back will subside completely.
* Please pray that Mia will be more and more alert, that her motor skills will continue to improve, and that she will be able to follow simple directions with greater frequency.
* Please pray that Mia will make steady progress in her rehabilitation.
* Please continue to pray for Mia's complete and full recovery.

UPDATE:

Mia's mother was over at our house last night for dinner...taking a break from the hospital. Yesterday, Mia for the 1st time tried to sit up in bed by herself! This is a HUGE accomplishment, and one of many answers to prayers.

Sunday...both of my daughters were over for the afternoon with Mia. They took her out to the garden/playground adjacent to the hospital. My youngest got into a little trouble for pushing Mia way to fast in her wheelchair...with Mia laughing through it all. My daughter said...they "were playing NASCAR..."

Mia continues to show dramatic improvements. Her awareness of her surroundings have greatly increased over the last several weeks.

I appreciate all of your continued prayers for Mia's recovery.

For a couple of weeks now, I've been hearing an ad on local news radio referring to an organization dealing with some sort of repairing of neural injuries... it was hard to understand the web site in the ad, most likely it was recorded for full-bandwidth FM stereo broadcast and I was hearing it on AM newsradio.

Anyway, I finally figured out the web site and figured I'd post it here... if it doesn't directly help Mia's case, maybe someone out there might make use of it.
(disclaimer: I don't know anything more about this organization other than the ad I heard on the radio, but immediately thought of Mia and figured I'd forward it).

We had a VERY SPECIAL GUEST at our house tonight for dinner.....yep, Mia was here with her mom. It's such a blessing to see first-hand the power of all of our prayers. Mia will be leaving Atlanta on wednesday to go home to Florida, and will be continuing her theropy in South Florida.

I wanted to let all you Warriors know that Mia is making great progress, and although there is still a long road ahead which will need your continued thoughts and prayers, it is GREAT to see her out of the hospital.

Thank You!

Greg

Direct link? I don't know if this will work... http://thestatus.com/index.cfm?fa=patdet&pid=60719081826&CFID=427598&CFTOKEN=26580052

UPDATE:

First of all...I want to thank my two NY friends above for the "bump", and the continued thoughts and prayers for Mia. I've been meaning to update this thread but have not had (taken) the time. I want to apologize to all of you who have been following mia's progress.

Now for the update...some good, some bad. First the GOOD...Mia is at home in Tallahassee! And she will be continuing her therapy at a top-notch facility in Ft. Lauderdale. She is doing well and continues to make progress.

The bad.....well, when Mia left the hospital here in Atlanta, she was supposed to be issued her own wheelchair and medications to last for some time. On her release date....no wheelchair, but LOTS of boxes of meds. mia's parents were promised the chair would be sent to Florida a.s.a.p. so, off they went. (Much to both me and my family's sadness and delight at the same time) Well, that was nearly 3 weeks ago...and STILL no wheelchair has been sent. After a couple of days, Mia's parents had to go out and purchase one on their own (and they ain't cheap). Even more troublesome was the boxes of meds....which were ALL in pill format! Mia has a permanent feeding tube and her meds need to be in liquid form. So....Mia's folks have been crushing up pills and mixing with water all of her meds. WARNING: Social Comment coming....why do I feel like if Mia's folks DIDN'T have insurance, and she was on "indigent care"...that everything would have been "in-order' on her release. For those of you who may be offended by this statement...I personally witnessed such "releases" from this hospital during Mia's 11 week stay here were I saw folks being taken care of in a much different way and learned from one of the duty nurses that no-insurance was the case. I'm not saying Mia should have gotten better treatment...but the same would have been nice.

Thanks to all of you that continue to pray for Mia...your prayers are being heard and answered.

New updates

14-Nov-04 08:24 PM - Marilynn : November 14, 2004

We have completed another busy week of HBOTs and therapies, and sweet Mia continues to make progress. She has adapted to her new routine -- in the oxygen chamber by 8:30am; out by 9:45am; up to therapy by 10am; out of therapy at 12noon or 1pm (depending on the day of the week); back in the oxygen chamber by 1:30pm; out by 2:45pm; entertain family and friends with new accomplishments from 3pm to 8pm; fall asleep on the couch by 9pm.

She is eating more by mouth each day (baby food primarily) and has begun to suck some liquids through a sippy cup. She is up to three or four jars of baby food each day, supplemented by her tube feedings. She is doing so well, we plan to ask her speech therapist for additional foods we might add -- things along the line of mashed potatoes...we'd love to have a special "plate" for Mia on Thanksgiving Day!

She is also excited about standing up on her legs, and trying to walk. Yesterday, she was sitting on the couch with my mom, and when asked to put her feet on the floor and stand up, she just did it (with grandma's hand on her back -- but she stood up on her own). She was so proud of herself, we called home immediately to spread the news.

She is making progress every week with the intense therapy and HBOTs, so we have decided to spend three more weeks in Ft. Lauderdale from November 28 through December 17. (We will return home to Tallahassee for Thanksgiving week to spend eight days with family and friends, and attend to some long-set appointments.)

When we return to Ft. Lauderdale, Mia will participate in a special three-week intensive therapy program, called "suit therapy". She will have four or five hours of therapy a day -- five days a week -- including a rigorous exercise routine, and the use of an Adeli Suit. The Adeli Suit, (developed by Russian doctors and physical therapists), utilizes bands placed specifically to hold the child in correct alignment, which increases strength, balance, body awareness, and function. Mia has already been "tested" in the Adeli Suit, and seems to respond very well, so we are hoping that this intensive program will help her toward walking, which she seems so anxious to do.

Of course, we are excited about the time we will spend at home, but we are also thrilled to have this opportunity to return to Ft. Lauderdale and participate in such a special program, (and be able to continue the HBOTs, as well). Please continue to keep Mia in your prayers during our "visit" home, and her next intense phase.

Prayers Answered
* Mia is consistently showing signs of progress, and follows simple commands immediately.
* Mia is standing up regularly and is really trying to walk.
* Mia is continuing to do well with swallowing and is eating more by mouth each day.

Prayers Requested
* Please pray that Mia's swallowing and eating will continue to improve.

For those of you who joined me in faithfully praying for Mia...I have an update....she just left my house, after walking through the front door about 2 1/2 hours ago. Mia, her Mother, Aunt and one of Mia's Therapists who helped treat her when she was here just came over to the house for dinner. Yes...you read that right...Mia walked through the front door with my 2 girls holding her hands. I wanted you all to know the power of your answered prayers. The Lord has blessed Mia with his healing hand.

Mia was in town for a quick procedure to remove her feeding tube with a "button" which will serve as the supplement feeding tube 'til it too can be removed in a couple of months.

Mia is still not talking...but my youngest sure had her laughing. What a joy it was to see, hug and talk to Mia.

Thanks again to all of you for your faithful prayers. And thank you Lord for your blessing of your healing on Mia.

Tod, how is Mia doing?

I had no idea this was going on 'till Haggis's update.

While I ain't a prayerful type guy, a thread tha mentioned prayer took nerve. Now I understand why. I'd like to hear about Mia's current progress. I'll be keeping her and her family in my thoughts. I can't imagine how I would feel if I was Mia's dad.

Thanks for asking...sorry so long since I've updated.

First, I want everyone to know that some time ago I printed out this entire thread and gave a copy to Mia's parents. They were brought to tears with all the heartfelt postings.

Mia continues to make progress, but at a very slow pace. She is able to swallow food, but still needs to be fed. The good news is no more feeding tube. She is still not verbalizing at all...and at times will go into "flashbacks" which are tramatic and painfull to witness. She is walking, if someone is holding her hand (her favorite is walking with my girls). Mia continues a strict regimen of therapy including an oxygen tank therapy here in Atlanta.

Last night I was watching the news on the WV coal miner (Randy McCloy) and it was amazing to see his progress in a very similar situation. Mia, I'm afraid has not made that type of a recovery.

The REAL issue now is the stressfull legal issues that you can imagine are now consuming Mia's parents time. Her medical/therapy bills are now in the millions of $s...and you can imagine what a weight that is for her family.

Once again, I thank you for asking and ask that you continue to keep Mia and her family in your prayers (as I do every morning) as they continue to struggle with this.

Wow - yeah, all happened before I joined up as well. A real heart-tugging story for sure, and one that so far is having a wonderful outcome.

I wish Mia the absolute best as she works hard to a full recovery - I'm sure it will come. She is fortuante to have the support of a loving family and friends and that along with the strong determination she has already demonstrated will go very far to her full recovery.

Todd - Mia will be in my prayers as she continues down the tough but passable road to full recovery - a journey that while difficult is being made easier by the strong support from all.
