You could not get a Marauder car in 1958, but you could get a Mercury with a Super Marauder engine. How many cars could you buy at that time with a 400 hp engine? Mercury set the bench mark.

Correct: 1958 was the first time "Marauder" appeared in the Mercury line-up.

Our beloved cars started as an engine!

In the late '60's early '70'sMercury embarked on the most ambitious engine research and development program ever. Unparalled to this day!

In the late 50's, early 60's, a friend of mine (a devoted Chrysler fan) was stationed with the Navy somewhere on the west coast.

He claims that the car to beat, at least around his neck of the woods, was a 58 Mercury Monterey two door sedan, three on the column. He specifically said that the car had a 3-2 barrel set up and was stock out of the dealership.

Being a Chrysler fanatic, this was a very difficult thing for him to admit.

Even the 1962 406 Marauder engine, built 4 years later, has only 405 hp. Merc was the leader in 1958.
