Does anybody know if these engines are designed with fail safe cooling system?

I believe I read somewhere that the car has a "limp" home mode. Check your owners manual.

Failsafe as in the engine won't just shut off to make it safe for the engine or failsafe as in the engine will continue to run to get you safe till she physically breaks down?

Herein lies the 2 varying philosophies.

One is to reduce the engines performance and your ability to utilize it to save on a repair bill vs the engine running as all out as you ask it till she physically breaks. Both have pros and cons, the latter gives the driver more of a say, which is what I prefer.

To answer your specific question the MM defaults to the drivers judgement.

When these engines sense overtemp, they start shutting down cylinders intermittently to pump some cool air through. If you keep pushing it long enough, hard enough, especially in hot weather, bad things will still happen.

My understanding is when the engine overtemps, Failsafe is employed by alternating the spark not shutting those cylinders entirely. This occurs for up to approx. 200 mi.then a shutdown will occur to prevent permanent damage to the engine.unless you need to go further, then you must wait till the engine cools down, should restart
