View Full Version : Broken windshield

Had something happen today that I haven't seen before. I've had a particular rock chip in my windshield (one of a dozen or more) for months. It was just a chip not a crack, or so I thought.
I had my car in the air this afternoon to rotate wheels and tires and swap the fuel filter with a new one. When I let the car down off the jack stands I heard a pop. Scrambled to my feet and immediately saw a two foot long crack that spread from the bottom of the glass, through the chip in question and off at angle across the windshield.
I guess our chassis flexes more than you'd think with a full frame under it.
Anybody replaced the front glass in their cars? About how much does it run for a part with the same black edges and such?

Happened to mine while the dealer had it for the engine change back in April. Since they had the car, they replaced it for free.......

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

Only some states will allow you to claim it on your insurance. I live in Pennsylvania and I can’t. If they do make sure you tell your insurance company that it happened while you were driving and not as you told us.
It was great to meet you at Marauderville II.
Good Luck,
John

I feel the pain. :depress:
Some states like Kentucky require that auto insurance companies replace damaged windshields for free if the damage impairs the driver's field of view and/or is a safety hazard. I've had a couple replaced in my vehicles at no charge and had an installer replace them in my driveway. Like Jet said, best thing to do is check with your insurance carrier.

Just had mine replaced about 2 months ago, paid $175 after some diligent shopping and negotiating. I too had a rock chip that all of a sudden turned into a 2 foot crack one morning when I went out to the garage. Be warned, all the shops I called told me that if I would have had the rock chip repaired it would of only cost me $50 and the windshield would not have needed replacing.

Sorry to learn of your misfortune. I didn't know that about PA, it must be a new rule. I need to check with my insurance agent, but think it's covered under my comprehensive. The last time I lost a windshield, all it took was a call to an outfit that comes to the parking lot where you're parked and replaces it on the spot.

Um, you don't think they accidently tried to install that engine in the driver's seat, do you?

Just saturday morning drove the car to a local town carwash for what they called a Gold wash. car was taken in through the car wash and when it came out , jump in to drive off when I noticed an 18 inch crack from the lower right side of the glass towards the center. I notified the owner who could not understand how it happened. went to the dealer and was given the part numbers. Ford part #3W7Z-5403100-AA and Carlite part #DW-01506-GBY. I included the carlite part number because carlite is the manufacturing company that Ford uses for all our glass. I have a Carlite glazer that the dealership uses and will give them a call after I get a claim number from the insurance co. cost is 266.48 and I hope the insurance will cover it if not , then the carwash will have to foot the cost...

Uuuuhhh, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, or to rain on anyone's parade, but telling an outright lie to get insurance benefits is illegal just about everywhere, and is a felony in a lot of places. I'm no friend of insurance companies, but to me it's not worth risking prison time (or at least a very large fine and permanent criminal record) just to save a couple of hundred bucks. Just my .02 worth.

Thanks for the part #, SILVERSTREAK. I don't think I'm going to even try to hit my insurance for this. I've made enough claims against them lately as it is, and my insurance rates are taking a beating as a result.
Think I'll just pony up the bucks and chalk it up to all the highway miles and resulting rock-chips this car takes.
Re: repairing the chip: this wasn't one of those chips that leaves little spider cracks around it. It was just a little gouge, if you will, in the glass. That's why I never bothered getting it repaired. I have had good luck repairing chips in the past, actually, but this one didn't look to need anything. *shrug*

Good Luck,
JohnJohn, I just checked with my insurer (Erie) and was told that no such law exists in PA. It's covered under your comprehensive, and you may have a deductible, in my case it's $50. If the windshield can be repaired, then they try that, first at no charge, and if it can't then the $50 applies.
As far as not claiming the damage, why? You pay plenty in premiums and have a legal and moral right to exercise your part of the contract. I mean, they're not going to get mad at you, it's business. And, as far as being dishonest, the original damage occurred as a result of highway debris, no matter when it finally gave out. Just be thankful it went when it did. In short, they owe you a windshield, and you have every right to have them pay for it.

They also are at liberty to raise my premiums yet again, are they not?

Ross your point is well taken.
In this case though the chip was from road damage and that most likely caused the crack so i wouldn't feel guilty about reporting the chip and saying the crack spread.
It's not like he hit the glass with a wrench or something.

Although I have been tempted to do that at times when I can't get to some nut or bolt that some #$%^& auto designer put in a place where it's impossible to reach! :gunfire:

After a certain # of claims they will drop you. When you are dropped by an Ins. Co. it is difficult but not impossible to get Ins. You Pay. I would pay for the windshield out of pocket. Their are several prices one for the Ins co and one for individuals. You get a better price when you pay fot it.

Adrian - I would have the car wash pay for the glass. You don't want to put in a claim if you don't have to. They usually have some one the deal with. Demand a carlite (factory glass) windshield. That is the only glass you will accept.

Good point......
It is very crucial for you to have the Carlite Part Number so you can get the exact windshield you now have on the car.....

Insist on the proper windshield per part number, Carlite Part Number
Demand a carlite (factory glass) windshield. That is the only glass you will accept.
Correct, I have a 2003, 300A model and my windshield has the factory tint strip across the top, a 300B model may not have the factory tint strip across the top, I would prefer the same exact type.....IMHO.
