Back in Brooklyn, NY there is a old air field that a club uses to fly model planes. I once saw a Mig 29. It wasn't flying all that fast but it sounded like the real thing. It used about 2 liters of real jet fuel and the flight only lasted 10 minutes. The guy said he didn't have enough flap and it came down hard on the landing, breaking the front landing gear. :(

I can not imagine theamount of work and money that went into that B52. I hope it wasn't its maiden flight. If it was mine there would have been a picture of me getting physically ill.

One of my clients flies there. From what he tells me those guys are some pretty serious enthusiasts.

Imagine anyone being that passionate about a hobby.....

Had several opportunities to see B-52 squadrons (i.e. 12 planes) take off from Seymour Johnson AFB back in the mid '60s. The entire base and a sizeable part of NC shook from the power of the takeoff as they all got into formation. The wingtips would actually flex about 12 feet as they lifted off. That's why they need the training wheels to keep the wings from dragging when carrying a full load of fuel.

Similar scale UAVs for the military run between $500K to $1 Million. This one was probably somewhat cheaper (by 1/2) since it wouldn't necessarily have to meet Mil specs and standards. That's still a pretty expensive model plane -- seems they might have had problems with the control surfaces on the left side.

The Mig29 I saw was about $20,000 for a basic kit I think. It only had 2 engines. The B-52 must have been a pretty penny.

Building is like any other model. I built a 3' wingspan P38-Lightning (with dual props) from stock wood in about 6 months of working weekends. It took another couple months to retrofit R/C control into it and get the balance right.

I've seen Jet turbines availlable from manufacturers in Sweden and Germany for about $1000 - $2000, depending on thrust and size. Some can produce 10-20 pounds of thrust!

I've seen complete R/C jets for sale in Sweden for 20,000 Kroners (?), about $4000.00 IIRC. Some were really cool - F-18's, Eurofighters, F-4's.

A very expensive hobby, but very rewarding too. Unless you can't fly . . .

This guy (I think he's German) built this nice flying Concorde jet model.

He's also done several other models of jet liners. Here's the link to his website (it's in German, but google will translate it) His Lufthansa 747 is awesome and similar in scale to the B-52

You caught me, Sir...Marty sucked me in on a thread about a potential client that had modified a piece of equipment and then wanted the manufacturer to warranty it (of course it was really a story about modding the Marauder)...:fishing: He got me hook, line and sinker on that one.:shake:

I read all his stuff in a different light now.

They all look amazing. But you have to wonder - where the heck do they keep these things? Some of those fighter jet models will do well over 400 km/h!!

That B-52 was sad, but them's the breaks. At least he'll have fun rebuilding it!

Oh My God!

I feel terrible for the tiny President, tiny secret service, tiny stewardess & all the tiny pilots that were killed in the crash. I wonder if they hung the tiny flag at half mast after this tiny disaster.

A tiny bit of my thoughts and prayers are with their tiny families.

My bad I thought it was a tiny air force one.

I’ll now change my statement to:

I feel bad for the tiny servicemen & women who lost their life in this tiny disaster.

Too bad.....that's an amazing amount of work/engineering in that not-so-little model! They could have used it to deliver a tiny NUKE to Osama bin Laden!!!

A buddy of mine built a 1/8 scale P 51 Mustang. His wife calls it "the cottage" because she figures that is where the cottage money is.

Like was said earlier, sounds like the real thing. When I was shipped to CCK Air Base Taiwan, we refueled at Anderson Field Guam. Listening to those heavy weights take off for the 'Nam, was a sight to behold!!
