Seen in Sweden last week. I wasn't able to snap a pic of the front end in time but it had that egg-crate style look grille that was seen on mid 70s Thunderbirds, etc, with 2 headlights per side slightly set back from the center of the grille.

My gut feeling says early 70s because I thought mid 70s bumpers would stick out more. However, not knowing Ford's export programs of the 70s, this could well be a Euro-specific car. I'm hoping someone here can confirm this.

Here's a closeup:

Looks like a Euro spec '71-'72 LTD. The TBird sail panel bars are an interesting touch.

http://www.tripletransam.com/2004/swe/DSCF7588b.jpgI think it's a '71. Here's the only rear shot of a 71 I could find on a quick search. There are some minor differences (black paint band on the rear trim piece - but it looks like there was one on the junker, it's just weathered off - blue Ford oval) and of course the car above is a 2 door, the junker a 4 door.

And the dual antennas and mud flaps.:woohoo:

It's a 1970 (US) Galaxie 500 (which could be a '71 Canadian) with some add-ons. Antennas were mounted on the left front fender that year, went to the right fender in '71 and up. The bumper guards, rubber trim and lower bodyside mouldings are from the LTD. '68 Thunberbird roof thingys, and "Rootin-Tootin Sam" mudflaps...What did I win?

Coolness...

Thanks, all, for the details (and thanks for that junker shot, it shows EXACTLY the front end I saw).

Besides the obvious owner customizations, is there anything on this particular car that would point to it being a locally-sold car (when new) versus being imported later on? I'm thinking it was a US car that was imported to Sweden over the last 30 years, I'm not even sure the 'big' Fords were available over there at any time, to be honest.

Regardless of opinion on the customizations, the car did sound awesome. Not a cammed-out-of-control kind of sound at all... just a wonderful deep deep deep rumble. Very tasteful.

The Swedes appreciate old-style North American cars and there is quite the active automotive culture in Sweden. Very little rice... the 4-bangers are modified for true performance with very subdued exterior upgrades. The big V8s are usually reserved for weekend fun duty, especially considering the cost of operating a big motor over there.

A couple of days after I took the above pic, I spotted the following not more than a block away from where I was staying, in front of a 13th century church in the oldest part of town.

Nice Ford no doubt ... but that Olds da' ****nit.

Tell him I'll give him (1) fine Japanese enginered 2000 Solara for it.

That aftermarket steering wheel is free to anyone for the asking ... after I swap it out for the correct 4-spoke Olds one.

Never did get to meet the owner. I suspect it was being used as a carriage for the bride and groom getting married within the afore-mentioned church. The car was not perfect: the chrome was pitted many areas and some of the panels were not the straightest, but it was a solid nice driver from the looks of things. And I'd rather have a solid driver than a perfect trailer queen.

Had I been there a few weeks earlier, no doubt I'd have seen more 'classic' iron. Nonetheless, even so late in the season, I did get to see 2 Vettes (late 80s and mid 90s) and a mid 90s Camaro Z28 convertible. I usually manage to run across this guy with a late 80s red GTA (which usually gets me all hot and bothered) but not this particular trip.

It's a stock 71 with bumper guards and after market (probably) bars on the roof.

72 had the tail lights and bumper guards integrated into the bumper. 70's (and 69's) had a different roof style (not as formal in the C panel) and tail lights.

I had a new 72 Ginger Glow (metallic brown) LTD Brougham (that's when brown was the in color) with an interior that was composed of a very high class cloth (high back split seats), not vinyl. Car had the 400-2v motor with (optional 352 rear end.

Not too much off the line, but really started to go when it banged into second.
