CaptDavid,

Here is from my previous post..

"The Valentine V-1 is one of the best radar detectors... IMHO the best for the money.. go to http://www.valentine1.com/ for more info... for a detector shoot out go to http://www.speedzones.com/test2002new/test2002.htm and you read the 2002 results..."

If your going to run, run with the best....

CaptDavid:

I agree whole heartedly with 03 Merc to a certain extent. Don't get me wrong, I love my Val1, but it as well as the others have limited use around lidar (laser/radar). By the time the Laser is detected it's toooo late to react. I'm gonna augument my V1 the a K40 Laser Diffuser later this spring. It'll mount to the front plate, and confuse the lazer gun long enough for me to react to the warning. Other than that, I wouldn't give up my V1 for anything, well, alomost anything.

Problem is in states like CT they have outlawed Radar Detectors. What to do, what to do?

Can you give us more infor on the K40? Cost, where to get, etc.??

1) Hide it ...............

2) Link to K-40 (http://www.k40.com/Products/Radar/LaserDefuserPlus.html)

It has saved my butt more than once. Well worth it.
buy on line or check places that install radios, truck stops etc.

(I received mine from a neighbor as payment for parking his truck in my driveway)

let me know I'll send (pm)you the address

Guys,

If you are in a state that has outlawed radar detectors make sure you check out the test results in the second link.. It has a section that covers how detectable a radar detector is.. also a good section on laser / lidar..

I know that in the 80's radar dectors were illegal in CT. While I lived there in the early 90's they REPEALED that ban, making them legal. The law could have changed back since then, but I don't thinks so.

Now am so fortunate as to live in the ONE REMAINING STATE IN THE UNION where radar detectors are still illegal .... Virginia. Anyone figured out a good way to hide their V1 in the MM and still have it located for good reception (up high)? For now, mine resides in one of those tack little storage bags that hangs from the visor. Does not seem to impede radar reception, though of course LIDAR will go completely undected ... but I don't care about LIDAR detection for two reasons: 1)I agree that by the time it goes off, it's too late to do anything but smile and wave 2) at least with laser I have fighting chance because the office has to have LINE OF SIGHT on me so MAYBE I can see him first

Somehow this discussion puts me in mind of the good old CB radio ..

Keep the shiny (black) side up, and the grimy side down pardners ;)

Russ, I'm in Virginia too. I try to use other cars as decoys, figuring they'll trigger the detectors first. I don't want to risk the double-whammy of getting caught with the detector while speeding.

When I did get a ticket in Maryland (I was the only car on the road, doing 70 in a 55), the officer was using laser. He said he got me 2500 feet away - a half a mile down a straight-away on Route 13. His car was tucked back off the road. I never saw him until he was standing in the street, flagging me down. I believe he got me at that distance because that's when I noticed I was going that fast and had slowed considerably before I sighted the officer. I don't know if a laser detector would've helped me at all, unless it was connected directly to the throttle or the brake. Now, that would be a feature I could use! If it were legal in Virginia, that is. ;)

Heck-everbody here in Charlotte does 70 in a 55--cops don't even look untill 15 over posted here for that reason....traffic just wouldn't move otherwise --sure the same is for other cities..say..like Atlanta....right --

they'll run you over. And that's right through downtown in an area we call "the connector" where 2 Interstates (I-85 & I-75) come together "as one" and snake right through the buildings in downtown. 8 lanes each way BTW...

I thought everyone knew speed limits in Atlanta are "optional" and if you are going to follow it, and get run over, the speed limit equals the road number;)

Seriously, the only time I fire up the V-1 is on the interstates outside of the city.. Especially on I-75 around Tifton, Georgia...lots of tax collecting, I meant enforcement  in that little burg.. My V-1 starts chirping at the county line and stays on for at least fifteen minutes going thru that joint..

New Jersey is like that too. Everyone is serious about their driving and getting to where they need to be, as quickly and safely as possible. You would get pulled over if you were pulling bone-headed moves, but as long as you were with the flow of traffic, keeping a safe distance, everyone was cool. I think that's why I was in for a big surprise when I moved to Virginia. We have major accidents on the commuter routes nearly every day here in the Norfolk area during rush hour demolition derby. I don't think it's the speed, per se. I think it's due to driver inattentiveness and that's a lot harder to measure and regulate.

I know what you're saying about VA. Here in MD you can't go a block without coming up on some radar. Good thing I write me own auto policy. hehe

If you live in a Military Community like I do: (Ft. Stewart, Hinesville) than you must own a radar detector of some kind. Because the local Police are always on the move, especially on pay days. They're not that bad but you don't get no warning. If you're pulled over than expect a ticket, period. :argue:

I have a new V1, without the remote. There was a perfect place to put the V1 in my '95 Impala SS, but I am stumped as to where to put the V1 in my '03 MM. My first thought was to hardwire to just where the windshield and headliner meet and then to run the wire to my visor and clip the V1 there. Prob with that is that every time I want to use it, I have to level my visor with the road. I want it to be stealth and somewhat hidden. Has anyone come up with a more ingenius idea, locale? Pictures?

Thanks,

I used the suction cup mount and placed it to the left of the overhead console right at the edge of the shaded area of the upper windshield. I used a hard wire adapter and ran the wire down the front of the headliner to the A Pillar. Pulled that rubber pillar gasket back pushed the wire into a channel there and the wire popped out right by the fusebox. I pushed a terminal into a unused fuse socket that was hot all the time. Would have preferred switched with igniton but didn't want to pierce any wires for warranty reasons. The hard wire adapter for the detector is fused so it is protected. The detector looks great up there, you don't really see it from outside the car and the V-1 can still see out the back window. If I pull the sun visor down it will block the front of the detector but thats not a problem since it is a fairly rare occurence anyway.
