View Full Version : The Black Bomber gets new tips.

This evening I had the Deleted tips put on the Black Bomber and does she ever growl louder. At 85mph I was pulling about 3000rpm and that exhaust note did sound sweet. It dose make quite a difference inside the cabin, for those of you who do not like that loud droning noise do not do this mod and I don't know if I would be able to handle it over long distances.
That is why I had flanges welded to the exhaust pipes and to both the Deleted tips and the OEM tips. This way I will be able to change the tips on my car to suit my driving mood at the time, like if I am taking the In-laws out to dinner or going on long trips and don't want the exhaust to be too loud. Or if I am going to a car show or back to the track and want a nice loud rumble it's there. Now I have the best of both exhausts.

The solution for less cabin drone is a better sound system. I spent this afternoon listening to my friend Frank, with 800 watts behind him.
There's never been a stronger "Summer Wind" around here...

This is where we see that it is a real shame that you don't get along with Donny better. If you did, he could make some pretty strong wind in your car. In fact I bet he would be happy to do just that.....

I bet Chris never lets you put the stock tips back on though.....she's my kind of gal!

I've been noticing talk about changing the tips and will do a search on the threads to get a better idea of what's going on. Is there some sort of muffler in the tip? My '97 Cobra drove me nuts with that 2,000 RPM drone. At first the rear seat was down so we could hear the lovely sound, then up, so we couldn't. I like your quick change idea, so you can have it both ways. I'm wondering about performance gains. :)

I'm wondering about performance gains.
There are none.
The factory tips have a "resonator" effect to them by virtue of the tailpipe being continued partially into the tip before actually becoming 3" diameter. Swapping to the "resonator delete" tips simply produces a slightly louder tone outside the car and additional cabin drone inside...it's not for everyone.

One way to reduce the drone (with or without the delete tips) is to move the tips so that they stick out past the bumper a bit further. This also lets that great Meg's logo show. The only caveat here is that if you get rear ended the exhaust system is more vulnerable.

good idea with the tips, you can also add sound proofing to the back of car as well. I like drone, my car doesn't sound loud enough to me, though others say they hear it from a block away.

With my reputation for backing up (hit the garage AGAIN) it's best to have 'em inside the cone of protection. Once, I backed the '88 5.0 LX against a bank, and stuffed up both pipes with sod. Guess I'll be looking/hearing Haggas' ones first. That is, if they can be heard over the whistle. Seems like he did a neat job though; can't wait to see 'em.

I just got in my "resonator delete" tips from Innovative yesterday and going to have them installed tomorrow, (as soon as I get my brakes back together). Man am I glad I ran across this thread! Great post, and great idea about the flange! I too have had the same noise concerns, (if too loud).
Question: Is there any concern of exhaust leakage at the flange joint, and possibly a performance hit?
I'd love a quick response since I have this install scheduled for tomorrow. :)
Thanks!

Properly chosen and installed flanges shouldn't leak...even if a slight leak develops over time and usage, there's no back pressure at that point, so it's doubtful you'd even hear it...might just see a little black staining. In any case, there would be no performance issues.

Thanks for the speedy reply Overlord! That's what I was hoping to hear! I'm more excited about this mod now and know exactly what to tell my mechanic! I'm going to ask him to extend the tips out a little farther too, (l like that idea as well)!

Far as I'm concerned--louder the better---can't be loud enough for me....what I got now, 18" Magnaflows, deleted tips, I though was too loud when they were installed...but now I guess I'm so use to them , it needs to be louder--guess I need some other opinions --hope to get some in Commerce...my guess is I'll eventually doing something to be a bit louder.....we'll see...and ..yes..I too would like to see this switch thingy mentioned for the exhaust.......Tom

I just got back on the computer. There are gaskets between the flanges connecting the tips to the exhaust pipes. And as RF said that far back there should be no back pressure therefore no performance issues, just sound.
I will get some pics this weekend, it is suppose to be nice here on Sunday. Great day to wash and wax the Black Bomber.

I have a Cobra replica and had exhaust leaks at the "Header/Collector" sidepipe joint and the guys at Classic Roadsters told me to throw the gaskets away and use only the orange "Hi-Temp" silicone?? ;)
I did and no leaks!! :banana2:
That joint gets way hotter than the tips on the MM and I would suggest you have your guy seal the joint with silicone for a "Dripless" connection that can be taken apart in the future with ease!! :D

I deleted my mufflers, kept resonated tips
I drive w/no mufflers and tips extended and I love it. It is enourmously loud when driven aggressively but much more civil than you may think when driven "normally". I originally did this as a joke because my wife said I wouldn't do it. I intended to put mufflers back on, and actually did once but missed it so much I had them removed again.
To back up what Martyo said about extended tips being vulnerable, I got rear ended, not very hard, but it destroyed every bend in the left side exhaust, but that lady's INS company bought me a new left exhaust and it wasn't tough to have my exhaust guy delete the muffler!

I know of two others that have done this. It does sound sweet, but not sure if I would want to do this for on my daily driver. I like to get on it everyonce in a while, and that would be one more thing LEO could write me up for.

I just got back from my shop. I didn't have the flange/joint installed but had the resonator delete tips welded on like the factory install. My mechanic really didn't want to do it, (concerned about the weight of the tip, strength issues... whatever, apparently he is not as creative as you Haggis) so I made a deal with him.... He promised to do the removable joint job for me for free if I determine that the new tips are too loud. He didn't think they would be, and he was right! I love it! Granted, I haven't been at highway speeds yet, but extra volume, (to me) just seems like turning your stereo volume up one more notch or two... (maybe a decible or two).. just my guess, but I think it sounds great.
I did talk him into extending the tips past the bumper 2 3/4" inches. It looks sweet. I'll post some pictures this weekend after I pry my digital camera from my ex-wife's frigid embrace. :argue:
Thanks for all the, uh... "tips" (pun intended) everyone. It's still a great idea for anyone who isn't certain, but I think just the tips with stock exhaust sounds great.

No, I am certain. I love the sound of the exhaust with the Deleted tips, but I wanted to be able to have a quiter ride when taking the In-laws out to dinner and then be able to switch back when I am cruising around. There is also a constantly loud droning sound at 80mph, don't know what that will be like for long distances yet.
Chris told me; "Ok your car is loud enough now. Now I want my car louder." And seeing as she ordered a "Loud Mouth" cat back exhaust system from SLP for her car while we were in NJ. We had the same wrench hook up her exhaust the next day, now I am jelous. Her car now sounds the way a "Muscle Car" should sound. It now has that deep rumble at idle and sounds so sweet (LOUD) when she gets on it. Sure wish the Marauder could sound that good.

Hey guys,
Ok, I have my camera back and have some pics of my new "resonator delete" tips from one of our vendors, Innovative Interceptors. I had them extended 2 and 3/4 inches beyond the bumper for a few reasons:
To make the Megs logo visible.
Too extend the sound of the exhaust a little further from the vehicle.
To make the entire tip more visible, and add the extra "bling" of nice looking tips.
Here are the pics... let me know what you think! :)

Excellent pics Gordon! If I had print-outs of those with me at my mechanic's, I could have said, "Do it like this!" :) Yup, a picture is worth a thousand words... good job.
As it turns out, my "permanent" weld job is working out so far. I jumped on the freeway today... a little in excess of the limit to get my rpms up, (and turned of O/D as well). I think it sounds cool! Maybe I'm a little more deaf! :depress: lol.

Correct, you win the $64 question. The Marauder stays in its enclosed carport which is right next to the garage. You can barely make it out due to the angle of the photo, but it's there.

Hi Mate!
You won't believe this but I spent the day talking to speed parts people and muffler shop dudes about making the Marauder LOUDER.
I hate that low throaty sound. I like the stock sound but it just isn't LOUD enuff!. Where did you get the tips? How much? What did you pay for the install AND how did the flanges go on? How well do they work?
TELL ME MORE.
I was thisss close to having the mufflers cut out and straight pipe put in today. The guy said, it would give me more of what I already have. Hummm?
Could he have been right? I too have wanted my tips extended for the good
looks of it and we talked about lowering cabin noise that way too. I WANT
some more cabin noise though.
Were your tips extended past your bumper? Didn't see it in your thread.
Could your flange let go and you lose the tips? Can you send a picture?
My address; bucksfree@quixnet.net
I gave you my e-mail since I don't know if I can print just one item off this site or get a whole ream of stuff. If no picture, can you draw the flange?
I think this is the coolest idea Ive heard all day! I have been reading everything on the site about mufflers recently, was listening to Dynomax's
sounds,Flowmaster's sounds, etc. I can't believe you are the guy to steer
me in the right direction. Thank You!!:bows:

Hey, I just saw these and printed them. Any "tips" you or your exhaust guy has will be welcome. I will be doing this first. Then if I need more LOUD I can work on the mufflers. Looks like you kept your tips in the original location. I am going to extend mine back about 1 1/2" to 2". I saw a car like that and really like the look.
Now that you have had a chance to drive with a little more noise, do you see yourself needing more or less noise in the future?
Look forward to hearing from you and getting answers to my previous questions on cost, etc.
