Only called the GT....Ford didn't want to buy the name back because it was too expensive.......(The original builder of the GT40 wasnt part of ford)

actually Ford was the original builder of the GT40 Problem is that they never registered that name. the current owner of the name GT40 never had anything to do with the original, he makes replicas, but want a huge amount of money from Ford for them to use it.

Seems to me Ford would have some sort of legal precedence for it's use.

That's true, the real name of the original "GT40" was intended to be just "GT"

After a failed attempt by Henry Ford II to work with Enzo Ferrari on a bid for the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1963, the once potential partnership turned into a personal grudge match. So, with assistance from British racecar builder Lola, Ford constructed its own GT car. Named for its 40-inch height, the GT40 ultimately bested the Italians in1966 with a phenomenal 1-2-3 finish at Le Mans, forever securing the GT40's place in infamy. Ford continued to dominate the world endurance racing circuit through 1969, when Ferrari withdrew from the series.

Hey reap what actually happened is that ford mad a bid to buy out ferrari. A bid that was accepted exept for one thing, Enzo wouldnt let go of the race team. That is what started the grudge match that cause ole Uncle Henry to kick Enzos ass for a goood amount of years. ; )
