New Coin to honor veterans

Canada has just introduced a new quarter to honor our forces.

I was down at the Legion on Saturday and picked up a few. Very cool.

We should not forget. Yesterday was the 62nd anniversary of the invasion of Italy by the Royal Canadian Regiment (and the Devils Brigade!). It set the stage for D-Day.

November 11 is coming up too. Go to the Legion, and buy one of those men who fought in WWI and WWII a beer.

Here's a little story. It's about the Royal Newfoundlan Regiment formed in 1795, during WWI they were still part of Britan.

They were attacking a position that the allies lost many men trying to take; Beaumont Hamel in the battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916 . The Germans knew they were coming, and they knew the Germans knew it. But they did it anyway. They took heavy casualties, but the best one liner I've ever heard attributed to a Newf was one young man who had reached a German machine gun nest. He yelled to the Germans "How many of ya is there?". The reply was "9!". So the newf tossed in 3 grenades, and yelled back, "Shares 'dease amongst ya!". Those Newfies. So kind, always sharing.

When the hill had been took, the Major-General Sir Beauvoir de Lisle, Commander of the 29th British Division, wanted a parade to congratulate their efforts, so he ordered the entire batallion to assemble for parade. The next day, as they were parading past, the General was angry that not everyone had fallen in to parade. There were entire squads and platoons missing. 2 or 3 men where there should be a squad.

The General called his aide over and say angrily "I wanted them all here!"

The aide fought back tears and whispered back "This is all that's left."

Eight hundred-two men had reported for parade on July 1. Sixty eight showed up for parade on July 3. 86% casualties, but they took that hill.

Corrollary: We will NEVER do that again unless the commanding officer asks for VOLUNTEERRS FOR A SUCICIDE MISSION.
Net, net, Courage is admirable, but all dead except 68 out of 802 is bad news and ...

The commanding officer didn't even know the casualty list before giving
orders for a parade........We have that problem with our Hero's down here
too (Kerry) "Stolen Valor"....But some of us will never forget....:beer:

The coin, and the thought is nice. Too bad they cheaped out on the implementation (typical)
