Comcast uses GigaNews for its newsgroup service. 1GB/month is included as part of your monthly service at no charge. Additional monthly capacity can be purchased from Giganews.

I've... uh... Well, I've been downloading a little bit... Giganews offered to make my 20GB/month account unlimited, for only $2 more... :D

My goal is to break 250GB, this billing month. Check out the projected usage - I'm just about on track!!!

Pretty hard to reach those numbers with only the text groups. What kind of binaries you bringin' down, eh? Be careful of any software you find out there. Its the equivalent of making a deal out of a trunk in an alley. Everything may well be fine but its just as likely that you'll get bonked over the head (Trojans, virus, BSA, etc) and left in a heap. Not that I'm insinuating anything, just be careful.

I have browsed some newsgroups (NNTP) for years. The ALT.2600 groups offer a lot of technical and hacking information and of course there are the infamous ALT.BINARIES for porn and other questionable content. These days there is simply too much spam for them to be very enjoyable. The newsgroups used to be a prime source for underground type information. Try em, but use a filter and be careful.

Think of Newsgroups (Usenet discussion forums) as an archaic bulletin board service, before html came along. Questions/thoughts are posted and responded to. MS Outlook Express can be set up to access Newsgroups by setting up your account for an Internet news server.

Noodle around here by keyword and see what you find.

Messages can have photo and video attachments which count towards your download limits, sometimes many MB per image. 150GB is allot of daily downloading!

MM03MOK is correct. Newsgroups are very similar to the forums, here. Only difference is there are many thousands of groups, each with a specific intent, and follow a hierarchy. Take, for example - rec.autos.makers.ford and break it down:
rec(recreational disccussion types).autos(automotive topics).makers.ford(only topics about Ford vehicles)

How did I get to that amount? Uhmm... 3.5MBIT connection plus a DVD+/- ReWriter... I spend the bulk of it pulling from the alt.binaries.*** groups. I know software is readily available, but not needed, so why bother? Mostly, my downloads consist of videos (DVDs).

I do also retreive the odd video not available here, in Region 1 (mostly chinese movies).

In case you're interested, the computer setup is as follows: P4 3.2HT overclocked to 3712, 2GB RAM, primary hard drive 160GB, secondary hard drive 120GB...

Before anyone goes ape on me, I can honestly say that I use this as a rental/preview process - for example, I downloaded Shrek2 a couple weeks ago. I watched it, and WILL buy the retail DVD, when released on the 5th.

Downloaded versions are often stripped of material, given differences in the disc size (double that of current mass produced blank discs). I enjoy the extras, and am willing to pay for a quality disc.

At last count, I have some 360+ store bought DVDs (counting box sets as 1). I put a lot of good money into the manufacturers pockets, and use this as a tool, to decide which DVDs are worth the purchase.
